Thomas has been cut by the Texans, the Houston Chronicle reports. It looked like Thomas was set to see some work out of the slot for the Texans, but he became the odd man out after the team added fellow wideout Damaris Johnson on waivers.

Coach Bill O'Brien said WR Mike Thomas has the skill set to play both outside and in the slot. It's a bit of a stretch to suggest Thomas can fill the current hole in the slot for O'Brien. The ex-Jaguar was out of the league last year and hasn't been a productive player since 2011. O'Brien has set up the roster to run a lot of "12" formations with Garrett Graham and Ryan Griffin on the field at the same time, along with starting wideouts Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins.

Texans signed WR Mike Thomas, WR Andy Cruse, DB Loyce Means, WR Uzoma Nwachukwu, WR Rico Richardson, and DB Steven Terrell to reserve/future contracts. Thomas is the most notable name. He's fallen far. Thomas, the former fifth-round pick of the Jaguars, inked a three-year, $18 million extension with Jacksonville in 2011, was traded to Detroit in 2012, and failed to make either the Lions or the Cardinals' 53-man rosters in 2013.

Free agent WR Mike Thomas worked out for the Saints. Thomas is still just 26 years old, but it's been a good three years since he was a productive pro. He was released by the Cardinals at final cuts over the summer and has only gotten a couple nibbles in free-agent workouts.

Cardinals released WR Mike Thomas. The Cardinals are the third team to give up on Thomas in the past 10 months. The end is nigh.

Cardinals signed WR Mike Thomas. Thomas was released by the Lions just 24 hours ago. Thomas doesn't have much time to make an impression, but the Cardinals are unsettled at their fourth and fifth receiver spots.

Lions released WR Mike Thomas. Less than 12 months after sending the Jags a 2014 fifth-round pick for Thomas, the Lions are throwing in the towel. He couldn't earn consistent snaps even with several injuries in Detroit's receiver corps late last year, and struggled in 2013 training camp. Still only 26, Thomas should get another shot.

Lions WR Mike Thomas is practicing with the third-team offense in training camp, and "might not be long for the roster." Also working against Thomas is a $1.45 million base salary, which is fairly pricey for an end-of-the-depth-chart receiver. In Friday's practice, Thomas was "completely shut down" by practice squad-type CB Domonique Johnson. Thomas is on the verge of washing out of the NFL less than two seasons after ex-Jaguars GM Gene Smith gave him a five-year, $20 million contract extension.

Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official website doesn't see Mike Thomas as any higher than the No. 5 receiver, and he isn't guaranteed a roster spot. Twentyman groups Thomas with the likes of sixth-round rookie Corey Fuller, Kris Durham, Micheal Spurlock, and Devin Thomas as players competing for that No. 5 spot. Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson, Ryan Broyles, and Patrick Edwards are the top four heading into training camp. $1 million of Thomas' $1.45 million salary is guaranteed, so he may have an edge for one of the final roster spots.

Lions WR Mike Thomas says he feels "a lot more comfortable" in the team's offense this year. Thomas, acquired from the Jaguars for a fifth-round pick prior to last season's trade deadline, caught just five passes for a meager 28 yards in nine games after joining the Lions. If Ryan Broyles (torn ACL) isn't ready to contribute in Week 1, Thomas could see plenty of snaps from the slot.
