Week 10: Break from the Bye Weeks fantasysharks.com Sat 11/12/11 1:30 PM
Welcome to a Week 10 edition of the Brew Crew Corner. Happy Veterans day! To all those who have served, we thank you.
This is an odd week in the NFL. Due to the lockout, the bye week schedule has no teams off on this week but will have four off in week 11. Thanksgiving is still two weeks away but Thursday games started this week, so I hope you made sure that you had your lineups ready to go on Thursday for all your Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers you plan to pay.
The Golden Mug Award
Awarded to the fantasy player who came through for their team.
Vincent Jackson -- 7 receptions, 141 yards, 3 TD. Finally a big game from Jackson. He was putting up just 33 yards a game in the three weeks prior with no touchdowns. However, he had a bad game this past Thursday against Oakland, hauling in just one catch for 22 yards.
Willis McGahee -- 20 carries, 163 yards, 2 TD. Unless you are a McGahee owner, you may not have noticed that McGahee has been productive this season and has four 100-plus rushing games in seven games played. He is on pace to rush for 1,335 rushing yards and six touchdowns, which would be the most rushing yards in a season for his career and the most touchdowns he's had since 2009.
Julio Jones -- 3 receptions, 131 yards, 2 TD. Jones scored the first touchdowns of his career and topped 115 yards for the third time this season. If he can stay healthy, he will be a player to have when the fantasy playoffs arrive.
The Urinal Cake Award
Awarded to the fantasy player who you would like to, well, you know.
Delone Carter -- 4 carries, 8 yards, 1 fumble. During this time of year when starters get injured and you are searching for players to get you by week-to-week, you will read about a player starting and decide to put him into your lineup. What you don't expect is that player fumbling on the opening drive and then getting just two carries the rest of the game.
Jonathan Baldwin -- 1 reception, 12 yards. After jumping on the fantasy radar with a good performance on Monday night, Baldwin showed why players can be very inconsistent from week to week. The Kansas City Chiefs stunk against a bad Miami Dolphins team.
Matt Schaub -- 14-for-23, 119 yards, 1 INT. Schaub had his lowest fantasy total as he sat back and watched the running backs produce in this game.

Against the Odds - Week 10 fantasysharks.com Fri 11/11/11 9:06 AM
This marks the first NFL weekend since September in which no teams have a bye. Although there are several high TV ratings sort of games, some featured below, Vinnie finds most of the Week 10 lines a tad disagreeable. Regardless, there's enough going on here to make it worth your while. Starting with ...
Houston Texans @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+3): The Texans are off to the best start in franchise history, led by a dominant running game and dramatically improved defense. Don't be surprised when Arian Foster and Ben Tate gash Tampa Bay's crippled, clearly under-performing front seven for close to (if not more than) 200 rushing yards. Not that his services will be needed, Matt Schaub may not have had Andre Johnson around lately, but the fifth-year starter has been playing some really efficient football in road games. There's some real blowout potential in this game; Houston has now won three consecutive games in convincing fashion, and is sure to score a ton of points offensively, and matches up quite well against Josh Freeman and the Buccaneers' offense.
Gimme the Texans minus the points.
New England Patriots @ New York Jets (-1): The Jets have yet to lose at home in 2011, which is precisely where they've managed to rough up the division rival Patriots twice in a row. Shonn Greene's trend toward taking more carries and packing a wallop began against New England earlier this season, and continued into New York's current winning streak. As unreliable as Mark Sanchez's accuracy has been, he seems to have figured out how to feed his better receiving options the ball more often, and faces an atrocious Patriots' pass defense. Whether it's Wes Welker, Rob Gronkowski or Deion Branch, someone will reap the benefits of a passing touchdown from Tom Brady. For the most part, though, the Jets are in position to handle this aspect of New England's game plan just fine.
Gimme the Jets minus the points.
Pittsburgh Steelers @ Cincinnati Bengals (+3): This rivalry game figures to come down to whether Rashard Mendenhall can find any success against an excellent Bengals' run defense, how consistently Ben Roethlisberger can make the throws he'll need to against Cincy's solid but overachieving secondary, how well Pittsburgh's below-average offensive line can hold up against one of the better defensive line rotations in the NFL, who outplays whom between cornerback Ike Taylor and rookie receiver A.J. Green, and how poised Andy Dalton will be against the adverse blitz schemes ...
Good Call/Bad Call: Week 9 fantasysharks.com Fri 11/4/11 5:15 AM
What's the first question you ask when someone asks you to join a fantasy football league - what are the rules? Having a good set of rules written down for everyone in your league can help solve many arguments that come up from time to time in your league. How do waivers work? What are the rules for a tie? How is the draft order determined? These are all things that your rules should address. If you don't have a written set of rules for your league, there are many templates and examples that can be found by simply googling "Fantasy Football Rules." Not having a written set of rules can lead to league arguments, with some members saying, "Well, I didn't know that was a rule." With so many different leagues around, and with many different formats, spelling out those rules can help your league run smoothly and avoid arguments over disputes in your league. If you don't have a written set of rules, I'd write some right away before an argument that can break up your league occurs. Now on to the calls for the week.
Quarterbacks
Andy Dalton is having a decent rookie year. He has nine touchdown passes, one rushing touchdown and seven interceptions. He is making a nice bye week fill-in for teams that are missing their top quarterback. He's not going to win you any games, but he's not going to lose them for you either. This week he plays at Tennessee, which is ranked in the middle of the pack against quarterbacks. The past four games, the Titans have given up an average of two touchdowns and 281 yards per game. Dalton should be able to get in the mid-200s for yards and most likely two touchdowns as well. He makes a nice bye week fill-in if you're missing Cam Newton or Matthew Stafford from your starting lineup this week.
Matt Cassel has been hit-and-miss all season. This week he should be a big hit with his game against Miami. The Dolphins rank 30th against quarterbacks and every quarterback except one has two total touchdowns or more against them. The one quarterback that only had one touchdown was Philip Rivers, but he did throw for more than 300 yards in that game. Cassel should easily be able to exceed his season averages of 195 yards and one touchdown. Cassel would be a good call this week.
Matt Schaub saved his fantasy value with his rushing touchdown last week. Unless he can rush in another touchdown this week, you shouldn't have him in your lineup. Cleveland ranks in the Top 10 against quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers. Their ...

It was a day of shockers on Sunday as the winless St. Louis Rams dominated the New Orleans Saints and the previously struggling Philadelphia Eagles dismantled the Dallas Cowboys.
We're now halfway through the NFL season, which means shockers and upsets will become the norm and fantasy owners will be left wondering how Drew Brees can have his worst day of the year against a team that was signing cornerbacks off the street. As a Brees owner myself, it was maddening.
Now let's take a look at some waiver wire targets this week and whether or not you should waste your time going after them.
Alex Smith, QB, San Francisco -- Smith isn't on the list for anything he did this past Sunday against Cleveland. He's on the list because of who he plays in Week 11.
Week 11 is one of the worst bye weeks for quarterbacks as Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger and Matt Schaub will all need to be replaced by fantasy owners. If you're looking to grab an attractive option off the waiver wire for that week, take a look at Smith.
The 49ers host the Arizona Cardinals in Week 11 and there are a couple of reasons to target Smith as a bye-week replacement if you need a quarterback. First, Smith plays better at home than he does on the road. Second, Arizona has arguably the worst secondary in the NFL and the Cardinals are a miserable road team. Just think they got blown out by the Minnesota Vikings on the road.
Smith has been able to score roughly 20 points when facing bad pass defenses and he'll get to feast on a secondary that made Tarvaris Jackson look like Jim Zorn earlier this year. Again, Smith isn't a great fantasy option most weeks, but against Arizona anyone can look good. If you can get 20 points while sitting Brees or Roethlisberger, that's not a bad deal.
The Final Call: If you only carry one quarterback and need a replacement for Week 11, give Smith a look. Based on matchups you won't find too many better options out there.
Javon Ringer, RB, Tennessee -- It's official: Chris Johnson is now the second best fantasy option in Tennessee's backfield.
Ringer once again outplayed Johnson on Sunday, gaining 60 yards on 14 carries and hauling in a team-high five receptions. Meanwhile, the once unstoppable Johnson managed just 34 yards on the same number of carries and he's now averaging a Curtis Enis-like 2.8 yards per carry on the season.
After repeatedly supporting Johnson after poor performances, head coach Mike Munchak finally came out and said ...

Good Call/Bad Call: Week 6 fantasysharks.com Sat 10/15/11 9:06 AM
There are a lot of injuries occurring on in the NFL now that the season is in full swing. Whether it's just a minor injury or something that's kept your player out for a while, you should think about how this injury is affecting the player's performance. Just because that player hasn't been missing games, missing practices can hurt them as well. When a player hasn't seen the practice field in two weeks, that player has a slight decrease in their conditioning. These guys are elite athletes and their floor for conditioning is higher than yours and mine, but playing against other elite athletes means that you need to be in top condition. A wide receiver that is running 40-yard sprints down the sideline on every play needs to be just as fast on the first snap of the game as the last. Not having practiced for two weeks can really hurt the amount of effort they can put forth for 60 straight minutes.
As a general rule, if a player has missed more than one week of practice, I'll sit him until he's been back at practice for a week. This can be seen with guys like Arian Foster and Dez Bryant this season. These guys have been putting up points, but they're not doing what you thought they were going to be doing if they had been at practice for a full week and fully healthy. A mediocre player that hasn't practiced all week is probably not going to get his normal workload for the game. Less snaps means less chances to touch the ball, and that means less points on your roster. Paying attention to how many practices your players have missed can help you make those tough roster decisions when the time comes.
Now on to the picks for the week:
Quarterback
Andy Dalton will make a nice bye-week fill-in this week. Indianapolis has been weak on defense all year. Dalton has put up decent numbers against weaker defenses such as Denver and Buffalo, who both rank in the bottom 10 against quarterbacks. The Colts have given up at least 220 yards and a touchdown against every quarterback they've faced this year. Having the Colts who rank in the bottom 10 and having the game in Cincinnati should give Dalton enough to fill in for your quarterback while he's out.
Jay Cutler could also make a nice bye-week fill-in with a soft matchup against Minnesota in Chicago. Minnesota allows an average of 245 yards and both Matt Cassel and Josh Freeman have thrown touchdowns against the Vikings. Cutler has thrown a touchdown in all but one game this year. He should have no problem getting at ...

What Did We Learn - Week 5 Edition fantasysharks.com Tue 10/11/11 9:06 AM 6 Comments
If you're reading this, chances are you've watched a segment on television or read an article over the past few days about how much Al Davis meant to the NFL. While some of his decisions in recent years may have been questionable, his legacy with the league is beyond question. Without him, the NFL as we know it today probably doesn't exist. Thanks, Al.
Now on to Week 5:
DeAngelo Williams is now a sell high. Williams had a nice week last week, rushing 10 times for 82 yards. For an encore on Sunday, he ran 9 times for 115 yards and a score. With Cam Newton looking so good, running lanes have opened up. While his running has been much improved, I'm not sure it can be sustained. I own him in two leagues, and rest assured I'll test the market this week.
Jackie Battle is worth owning. Thomas Jones ran well, gaining 55 yards on 10 carries. But it was Battle with 19 carries for 119 yards that looked impressive. He's getting the opportunity, as well as the production. And while it was against the Colts, there's still something to be said for the workload he received. If he's still available, you may want to try to grab him off waivers.
Victor Cruz can be a solid player during bye weeks. Originally, Cruz was a fill-in while Mario Manningham was out with a concussion. But he played well in Manningham's absence, and now that the receiving corps is back to full strength, Cruz is still getting the ball. I think there will be highs and lows, but this may end up marking a real change in the Giants' scheme. They may be looking more to Eli, and less to that ground and pound mentality they're known for.
Don't count out the Steelers. Ben Roethlisberger, playing with a sprained foot, turned in what was easily his best game. He spread the ball all over, with Mike Wallace and Hines Ward were his go-to guys. While his yardage total was a modest 228, he threw five touchdowns with Jonathan Dwyer getting 11 carries for 107 yards in Rashard Mendenhall's absence. Even the Steelers' defense seemed to find itself, holding the Titans to just 66 yards on the ground. Just something to keep an eye on.
Matt Schaub doesn't need Andre Johnson to be productive. I had figured that Matt Schaub might struggle without Johnson in the lineup. And while the Raiders' defense is one of the worst in the league, Schaub proved that he has enough weapons to put up stats without him: 416 yards passing with a pair of scores. And that was with Arian Foster struggling to the tune of 68 yards on 22 carries.
