Welcome to a Week 10 edition of the Brew Crew Corner. Happy Veterans day! To all those who have served, we thank you.
This is an odd week in the NFL. Due to the lockout, the bye week schedule has no teams off on this week but will have four off in week 11. Thanksgiving is still two weeks away but Thursday games started this week, so I hope you made sure that you had your lineups ready to go on Thursday for all your Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers you plan to pay.
The Golden Mug Award
Awarded to the fantasy player who came through for their team.
Vincent Jackson -- 7 receptions, 141 yards, 3 TD. Finally a big game from Jackson. He was putting up just 33 yards a game in the three weeks prior with no touchdowns. However, he had a bad game this past Thursday against Oakland, hauling in just one catch for 22 yards.
Willis McGahee -- 20 carries, 163 yards, 2 TD. Unless you are a McGahee owner, you may not have noticed that McGahee has been productive this season and has four 100-plus rushing games in seven games played. He is on pace to rush for 1,335 rushing yards and six touchdowns, which would be the most rushing yards in a season for his career and the most touchdowns he's had since 2009.
Julio Jones -- 3 receptions, 131 yards, 2 TD. Jones scored the first touchdowns of his career and topped 115 yards for the third time this season. If he can stay healthy, he will be a player to have when the fantasy playoffs arrive.
The Urinal Cake Award
Awarded to the fantasy player who you would like to, well, you know.
Delone Carter -- 4 carries, 8 yards, 1 fumble. During this time of year when starters get injured and you are searching for players to get you by week-to-week, you will read about a player starting and decide to put him into your lineup. What you don't expect is that player fumbling on the opening drive and then getting just two carries the rest of the game.
Jonathan Baldwin -- 1 reception, 12 yards. After jumping on the fantasy radar with a good performance on Monday night, Baldwin showed why players can be very inconsistent from week to week. The Kansas City Chiefs stunk against a bad Miami Dolphins team.
Matt Schaub -- 14-for-23, 119 yards, 1 INT. Schaub had his lowest fantasy total as he sat back and watched the running backs produce in this game.
MATCHUPS
Good quarterback match-ups this week:
Cam Newton against the Tennessee Titans. Newton is tied with Aaron Rodgers as the top fantasy quarterback and played really well against the Minnesota Vikings before last week's bye, throwing the first three-touchdown game of the his career. The Titans come to town and the Panthers feel they can win this game after letting the Vikings' game slip through their hands. Newton remains consistent and should be the offensive rookie of the year. The Titans are allowing 231.5 passing yards per game (15th) with 14 touchdowns and 8 interceptions allowed on the year.
Matthew Stafford against the Chicago Bears. This game is for second place in the NFC North division as well as a spot down the road for a Wild Card because the Green Bay Packers don't look like they will give up first place. The Lions are coming off a bye week which should have been good rest for Stafford. The last time he faced the Bears he put up 219 passing yards with two touchdowns and one interception. The Bears defense has been playing well over the past three weeks but are still allowing 264.2 passing yards per game (26th).
Sleeper Pick of the Week: Joe Flacco against the Seattle Seahawks. Flacco has put up back-to-back weeks of 300-plus passing yards and has four over the past six games. The amount of touchdowns has been low, which has prevented Flacco from being an every week starter. The team is flying high after sweeping the season series with the Pittsburgh Steelers and has a game they should win. The Seahawks are 18th in the league in passing yards allowed (242.4 per game) with 10 passing touchdowns allowed this season.
Good running back matchups this week:
Frank Gore against the New York Giants. Gore has posted 107-plus yard games in five consecutive games with four touchdowns in that stretch. The Giants defense has had four games where running backs have rushed for more than 100 yards. They are averaging 127.1 rushing yards per game (24th) and have given up nine rushing touchdowns on the season. The only thing that can stop Gore in this game is his ankle. Check his status.
Maurice Jones-Drew against the Indianapolis Colts. Jones-Drew has been playing decent but hasn't put up top fantasy numbers like he used to. Last year, he posted seven games with 20-plus fantasy points but so far this year he has just one game with more than 20 points. This week he has a favorable matchup against the Colts, the first of two meetings. The Colts are ranked at the bottom in run defense, giving up 146.1 rushing yards per game (31st) and are tied with a league lead with 11 rushing touchdowns allowed.
Sleeper Pick of the Week: DeMarco Murray against the Buffalo Bills. Murray has taken full advantage of his opportunity, and even if Felix Jones returns Murray has done enough right now to get the majority of the carries. This week he'll face a buffalo team that has lost two of the last three games and is allowing 120.8 rushing yards per game (19th) with 10 touchdowns allowed this season.
Bad quarterback matchups this week:
Tom Brady against the New York Jets. Brady played well in their first meeting but over the past couple of weeks his offense has struggled and many are wondering if the team has hit a rut. The Jets are winners of three straight and will look to knock the Patriots out of first place. With the Buffalo Bills playing a Dallas team desperate for a win, the Jets could end the day in sole possession of first place. The Jets defense has been playing the pass well and has given up just two passing touchdowns compared to six interceptions in the past three games. The Jets are allowing 196 passing yards per game (sixth) and lead the league with just five passing touchdowns allowed all season.
Josh Freeman against the Houston Texans. This time last season, Freeman was ranked in the same spot, 12th among quarterbacks, but the leap owners thought he was going to take this season has not happened. Freeman will play through a thumb injury, but you have to expect that it will affect his passes some. The Texans are having their best season despite the games missed by Andre Johnson and the loss of Mario Williams on the defense. Houston's pass defense has improved and the team is second in the league, allowing just 182.6 passing yards per game.
Andy Dalton against the Pittsburgh Steelers. "The Red Rifle" tossed three touchdowns in a game for the first time this year and seems to be getting into a groove, but the next five games are going to be brutal as he faces Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Steelers again and then the Houston Texans. Those are teams ranked 1-4 in pass defense. The Steelers, which are third against the pass, are allowing 184.7 passing yards per game. Expect the Steelers to game out with more blitzing against the Bengals. Dalton will get his true test over these next five games.
Bad running back matchups this week:
Brandon Jacobs against the San Francisco 49ers. Ahmad Bradshaw is out again this week, which means the team will lean on Jacobs. Last week Jacobs had an unimpressive 78 yards and a score. He should be running with more authority now that he has the opportunity. This week he'll face the toughest run defense in the league that is allowing just 70.8 rushing yards per game and has yet to give up a rushing touchdown this season. Last week, all three Redskins running backs combined for just 43 yards on the ground against the 49ers.
Rashard Mendenhall against the Cincinnati Bengals. Mendenhall has been mediocre the past the games. He did score last week but had just 52 yards on the ground against a tough Baltimore Ravens defense. This week he will face another division rival that has a stout run defense, allowing 84.5 rushing yards per game (second) with six touchdowns given up this season. This is the first meeting between these teams before they meet again in three weeks.
Chris Ivory/Darren Sproles against the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons have been on a roll the past three games and are playing tough run defense. They have not given up a 100-plus yard rusher this season and are seventh in the league with 96.5 rushing yards allowed per game. Ivory is coming off a 67-yard game, but the Saints have not had a 100-plus yard rusher this season.
Week 10: The fantasy weeks are flying by as next week begins a three-game stretch to the playoffs.
