Preview: Jaguars at Titans brunoboys.net Wed 12/21/11 10:45 PM 1 Comment
THE STORY: Any chance the Tennessee Titans had of jumping up into an AFC wild card spot took a giant hit last week, when they inexplicably fell to the previously winless Indianapolis Colts. Matt Hasselbeck decided to play despite an injured calf and proved to be terrible, yielding to rookie Jake Locker in the fourth quarter. The Titans no longer control their own destiny in the quest for a wild card spot and will need plenty of help. The first thing they need to do is take care of the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday. This would seem to be a favorable matchup for Tennessee, but then so was Indianapolis. The Jaguars followed up a 41-14 win in Week 14 with a 41-14 loss last Sunday and have dropped four of their last five games.

It's Week 16. Crunch time. Remember what got your fantasy team to this point. Don't over-think your decisions. If you have Jordy Nelson, play him. Do not worry about Green Bay resting players this week. The NFC East will be plentiful with passing yards while the Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans and Pittsburgh Steelers will lead the way on the ground. Good luck this week and Happy Holidays!
I utilize statistical analysis combined with more than 15 years of fantasy football experience to give you an inside look of how players will perform on a week-to-week basis. The Studs list will be updated on a regular basis as players emerge and injuries occur, but be patient with those players listed early in the season. They were ranked and selected high in your draft for a reason.
When using this list, try and remember a couple basic rules:
1) Studs -- Always play your studs. Each position will include a list of players that are considered studs and should not be benched. If you have the luxury of needing to decide between studs, check out the matchups or feel free to let the shark tank assist you in your decisions.
2) Depth -- Every fantasy team is different and some have more depth than others. Only follow the recommended moves if your team depth allows you to make such a move.
Quarterbacks
Studs
Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay vs. Chicago
Drew Brees, New Orleans vs. Atlanta
Tom Brady, New England vs. Miami
Cam Newton, Carolina vs. Tampa Bay
Matthew Stafford, Detroit vs. San Diego
Eli Manning, N.Y. Giants at N.Y. Jets
Tony Romo, Dallas vs. Philadelphia
Matt Ryan, Atlanta at New Orleans
Philip Rivers, San Diego at Detroit
Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh vs. St. Louis *Questionable: Ankle*
Start
Michael Vick, Philadelphia at Dallas: Vick had a very solid game against the New York Jets last, week throwing for 274 yards with a touchdown and an interception while rushing for 32 yards and a touchdown. Look for his passing numbers to increase this week as Vick attempts to match his Week 8 performance against the Cowboys when he threw for 279 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and 50 yards rushing. This Eagles team suddenly has a new life and they are the scariest team in the NFC East by far. You'll see more reasons why this week.
Rex Grossman, Washington vs. Minnesota: Grossman had his worst game in over a month last week, throwing for just 185 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions against the New York ...
Titans QB Hasselbeck injures calf, exits vs. Saints brunoboys.net Sun 12/11/11 2:20 PM
Tennessee Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck left Sunday's game against the New Orleans in the second quarter with a left calf injury.
Against the Odds - Week 14 (regular edition) fantasysharks.com Sun 12/11/11 1:06 AM
New Orleans Saints at Tennessee Titans (+3.5) : The Saints are riding a four-game winning streak, and have beaten the spread in five of their last six. Tennessee has been a tough out at home, and should once again get some good production out of Chris Johnson -- this despite lackluster help in the run blocking department all season, which has surprised Vinnie considering the Titans are led up front by tackles David Stewart and Michael Roos, and underrated guards Jake Scott and Leroy Harris. Will that alone be enough, though?
Matt Hasselbeck will have his moments passing the football, probably getting Damian Williams involved. Now it's time to talk Drew Brees. The sixth-year starter for New Orleans is right now on a record pace, as in no other NFL quarterback has amassed as many passing yards through the first 12 games of a season as Brees just did. Also important, Brees has lost only two of his last 15 games versus AFC teams, passing for a cumulative rating of 103.6 and more than 300 yards per game. Expect Daniel Graham to once again come in very handy for Brees ... but you don't read Vinnie's analysis for gems of such as that, now do you?
Gimme the Saints minus the points.
Buffalo Bills at San Diego Chargers (-7) : Let's not complicate things unnecessarily. While Ryan Fitzpatrick has valiantly upped his game since Fred Jackson's departure from the Bills lineup, with the help of receivers Stevie Johnson and Brad Smith, this team is riding a five-game losing streak. Buffalo's defense has really fallen off, giving up touchdowns all sorts of ways. Enter Ryan Mathews, who is probably playing his best ball since going pro.
Speaking of Chargers with a good shot at posting eye-popping numbers Sunday afternoon, Philip Rivers will find success against the Bills' hit-or-miss pass defense. Buffalo's safeties are quality, but none of its cornerbacks have reason to book travel plans for Hawaii on Pro Bowl weekend. You want to tell Vinnie with a straight face that these guys will somehow be able to cover Vincent Jackson, Malcolm Floyd, Vincent Brown and Antonio Gates? San Diego lost against the spread six weeks in a row, prior to blowing Jacksonville to pieces this past Monday. This game pits against one another teams going in seemingly opposite directions, though, so you can feel confident in the Chargers covering.
Gimme the Chargers minus the points.
2011 Week 14 Preview: Saints at Titans brunoboys.net Thu 12/8/11 8:45 PM
THE STORY: The last time Matt Hasselbeck started against the New Orleans Saints, he and the Seattle Seahawks sent the Saints home early from the NFC playoffs. This time, Hasselbeck would settle for snapping the Saints' four-game winning streak and bolstering his team's own playoff hopes when the Tennessee Titans host the NFC South leaders Sunday. The Titans have won nine of their past 10 home games against NFC opponents, and they've won four straight against the Saints. In the most recent meeting in 2007, Vince Young led the Titans to a 31-14 victory in New Orleans.
Good Call/Bad Call: Week 13 fantasysharks.com Fri 12/2/11 7:30 AM 3 Comments
We made it. The last week of the fantasy football regular season. Next week should be the start of playoffs for most of you. While some of you already know if you're in or you're out, some of you may be fighting for a playoff spot. I'm going to remind you that if you haven't already, make sure to pick up some backups for your starters. You're going to want to make sure you have a backup quarterback, tight end, defense, and kicker on your roster, just in case something happens. You never know when an injury might happen and it's a good idea to plan for that scenario. Make sure to take a look at your defense and kicker and see what kind of matchups they have coming up over your playoff weeks. Make sure that your kicker won't be playing in any games where wind, rain, or snow could play a factor in the game. Nice, safe dome or warm weather games are preferred for your kicker to have the best chance to make all the kicking attempts he gets.
Also, take a look at your defense to see if they are going to be playing teams that score lots of points, or if they play teams that play sloppy football. While the Denver Broncos are winning a lot of games, Tim Tebow has been getting sacked a lot. Teams like this are the ones that you're going to want your defense playing against during the playoffs. Also, just because your defense is playing in a bad weather game doesn't mean they're going to be getting a lot of turnovers. A pass that is hard to catch for a wide receiver is just as difficult for a safety or cornerback to pick off in bad weather too. Slippery balls are hard for everyone to hold onto, not just offensive players.
Being mindful of these types of factors that could get you a few extra points, when getting the most points you can, really matters. Now on to the calls for the week:
Quarterbacks
Since Tim Tebow took over the starting role after the Denver Bronco's Week 6 bye, he has been a fairly solid fantasy quarterback. Not to mention he's 5-1 as a starter. His passing totals haven't been that high, but his rushing totals have made up the difference. The minimum he gets you every week is six points from his rushing. Tebow has only one game where he hasn't thrown a touchdown, and has only two turnovers on the year. This week Tebow goes to Minnesota which ranks dead last against quarterbacks and below average against running backs. Tebow should be able to put up some good numbers for your team going into the fantasy playoffs, and would be a good call this week...

THE STORY: If ever there was a game the Tennessee Titans needed their $50-plus million dollar running back to show up for, this is it. Matt Hasselbeck is expected to start at home Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he's less than 100 percent after suffering elbow and forearm injuries last week. Thus, Tennessee needs the enigmatic Chris Johnson to rebound from one of the worst games of his career. Johnson's struggles are a big reason Tennessee has alternated wins with losses over the past four weeks. The Buccaneers, meanwhile, are hoping to end a four-game skid. The Tennessee franchise has won seven of the nine meetings, including six straight at home (four in Houston).
Good Call/Bad Call: Week 12 fantasysharks.com Thu 11/24/11 5:45 AM
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. What a glorious holiday. You (hopefully) get a day off from work. You get to eat great food with family and friends. You get to fill your face until you're so stuffed you can't move off the sofa, and since you can't move anyways, there's nine straight hours of football. Yes, what a great holiday. This year, the set of games are some of the best that I can remember. I won't go into detail about how good the games are going to be because you've probably already read enough on them. I'd like to talk about something else before I get into the calls for the week.
The NFL really needs to go back and address this "completing the process of the catch" rule. Twice in the past two years have we had completed passes for touchdowns called back because of this rule. Last year we had the Calvin Johnson catch where he is holding the ball out in front of him with one hand while he's falling on his back in the end zone. As he rolls over to get up, he sets the ball on the ground and the refereess call the pass incomplete because he "didn't complete the process of the catch." Right ... This past week we had the same thing happen again. Jermaine Gresham catches a ball with one hand, turns, falls into the end zone, and then with the ball in his hand, touches the ground. No good. Didn't complete the catch. If a guy gripping the ball with his hand on top it, palming it like a basketball player going for a dunk, isn't a catch, then I don't know what is. Watch the replay, and you can clearly see that his hand is on top of the ball and it's not moving in his hand. He clearly has possession of the ball in the end zone. This is something the NFL referees need to take a look at in the offseason and tweak the rule or we're going to have to watch even more catches for touchdowns get called back. Now on to the calls for the week.
Quarterbacks
Last week was the first time all season that Matt Hasselbeck didn't throw a touchdown pass in a game. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have allowed multiple touchdown passes in 60 percent of their games this year, and in every one of their last three games. The Buccaneers also allow around 250 passing yards per game. Hasselbeck would make a good call this week with all the injured quarterbacks around the league.
If you're not starting Carson Palmer yet, get him in your lineup this week. He gets the Chicago Bears in Oakland this week. He has thrown a touchdown pass in all three of his starts this year, and his interception ...
The Feeding Frenzy fantasysharks.com Tue 11/22/11 9:00 AM
In the last couple of weeks, two teams with Super Bowl hopes -- Houston and Chicago -- have lost their starting quarterbacks. Throw in Adrian Peterson going down with an ankle injury and fantasy owners are starting to get their usual late-season headaches.
Luckily, even though we're entering Week 12, the waiver wire always offers some hope. Let's take a look at this week's hot waiver wire targets and whether or not those players are worth pursuing.
Jake Locker, QB, Tennessee -- Locker came in against Atlanta when starter Matt Hasselbeck left with an elbow injury. Coach Mike Munchak has already said Hasselbeck will still be the starter if he's healthy but it appears that Locker's time is coming.
One thing Locker gives the Titans is mobility. Hasselbeck has been under heavy fire in recent weeks, and with his lack of mobility the veteran is a sitting duck. On Sunday, Locker was able to elude pressure and make plays down the field.
One thing I noticed about Locker, though, is he really struggled throwing to his left. Damian Williams was lined up to Locker's left and he was targeted seven times. None of those seven passes ever had a chance. Every one of Locker's passes to Williams sailed over his head or out of bounds. Locker threw very well to his right and when he was on the run. I'm not sure if it was just one game or if it's an issue with mechanics but it's certainly something to keep an eye on if Locker starts this week.
The Final Call: It's unlikely fantasy owners fighting for a playoff spot need a starting quarterback right now. However, if you play in a two-quarterback league Locker is worth picking up. He could have some fantasy value if Hasselbeck is sidelined.
Kevin Smith, RB, Detroit -- In one of the more shocking performances in recent memory, Smith came off the street to record 201 total yards and three touchdowns Sunday against Carolina.
There's no question Smith was running hard, but if you watched the game you saw how truly pathetic the Carolina run defense is right now. I can't remember a game where I've seen so many missed tackles by one team. I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt things won't get any easier for Smith this year.
Now that's not to say Smith doesn't have any fantasy value. It's not like the Lions are loaded with great options at running back. Plus, Smith is a good receiver out of the backfield and the Lions love throwing the ball to their backs.
Smith has obviously earned more playing time, but ...
Titans QB Hasselbeck doesn't have structural forearm damage brunoboys.net Mon 11/21/11 6:15 PM
Tennessee Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck suffered no structural damage to his right forearm and elbow, and simply has a muscle strain.
