Ravens released WR Lee Evans. Evans was owed a $3.275 million base salary and had a $1 million roster bonus due on March 18. The Ravens were never going to pay them after he caught four passes in nine appearances during the 2011 regular season. Evans should draw some interest on the market, but his best days are likely behind him going on age 31. Look for Baltimore to add competition for its third receiver position. Tandon Doss and David Reed are weak in-house options.

The Buffalo News' Jay Skurski "can't envision a scenario" where Lee Evans returns to the Bills this offseason. Evans is expected to be released by the Ravens within the next few days, sending him to the open market. Coach Chan Gailey had suggested in the past that Evans was a one-dimensional player. At this point, teams will likely view him as a situational deep threat as opposed to a legit No. 2 receiver.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens "remain on the lookout for at least one more explosive receiving threat."

Lee Evans has a salary-cap number of $5.6 million for 2012. That includes a $3.3 million base salary and $1 million roster bonus due on March 18. Needless to say, Evans' bonus won't be exercised after he caught just four passes during an injury-plagued first year in Baltimore. The Carroll County Times believes Evans will be allowed to walk unless he is amenable to a "significant pay reduction."

Lee Evans caught three passes for 39 yards in the Ravens' AFC title game loss to the Patriots. Evans had a chance to put Baltimore ahead late in the fourth quarter, but couldn't secure the would-be touchdown pass from Joe Flacco as Patriots CB Sterling Moore batted the ball out of Evans' hands. Acquired for a 2012 fourth-round pick on August 12, Evans contributed just eight catches for 143 yards in 11 appearances, including the playoffs. Due a $1 million roster bonus on March 17, Evans is a candidate to be released this offseason.

Ravens third receiver Lee Evans played only eight offensive snaps in the team's Divisional round win over Houston. Evans did haul in a 30-yard deep shot against the Texans, but his role has been minimal this season with Anquan Boldin healthy. As NFL Films guru Greg Cosell noted, the Ravens simply don't use more than two receivers on the majority of offensive play. Due a $1 million roster bonus in mid-March and a $3.275 million salary, it's going to be hard to imagine Evans returning in 2012.

The Ravens owe Lee Evans a $1 million roster bonus on the fifth day of free agency. The fifth day of free agency would be March 17. Evans turns 31 early this offseason and was thoroughly unproductive in 2011, managing four catches for 72 yards in nine appearances while falling behind supposedly raw rookie Torrey Smith. He may need a big playoff run to convince the Ravens he's worth the bonus. Evans' 2012 cap number is scheduled to be just under $5.8 million.

Lee Evans was held without a catch in the Ravens' Week 17 win over the Bengals. The Ravens never got Evans going after a serious early-season ankle injury, and he finished the year with only 74 yards on four catches in nine games. They'll likely need more in the playoffs if they're going to have a consistent vertical passing game. Evans was only targeted once against the Bengals.

Lee Evans started the Ravens' Week 16 game against the Browns, but did not catch a pass. With Anquan Boldin (knee) inactive, the Ravens started Evans at flanker and Torrey Smith at split end. Evans was targeted four times, but all fell incomplete. Boldin is out until the playoffs, so the Ravens have another game to try to get Evans reincorporated into the offense against the Bengals in Week 17.
