Week 2 was full of wacky and wild performances and the injury bug was in full contagion. For the most part, injuries were isolated to quarterbacks, defensive players and big men. Oddly enough, most running backs were spared. That didn't stop a handful of teams from completely changing their rushing attack over the course of one week. The Redskins shocked the league with a new rookie weapon, while the Patriots asserted yet another anonymous half back. The Eagles recorded negative yardage on th[...]Keep on reading: Week 3 Running Back Depth Charts for Fantasy Football

This may be an unpopular opinion, but the fantasy performances of Week 1 were largely uninspiring. Only four running backs surpassed 20 points in standard fantasy scoring, as nearly 75 percent of the top 30 ranked running backs failed to live up to Week 1 projections. Still, in the spirit of NFL unpredictability, two of the top 4 running backs are not who you would expect. Although the stats may not have been dazzling, there is much to be learned from what did and what did not happen in each [...]Keep on reading: Week 2 Running Back Depth Charts for Fantasy Football

Committed or Committee: NFC Edition fantasysharks.com Mon 9/2/13 9:06 AM2 Comments

Several years ago, "running back by committee" was not a widely used phrase. Most teams used a primary running back for the majority of carries and then may insert a backup in certain situations or to give their starter some rest. One of the more prolific early running back by committees was the Kansas City Chiefs' combination of Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson. Due to their strong skill set and differentiated running styles, both backs had productive seasons behind Kansas City's offensive line. Today, we see teams using both strategies, which can serve as both obstacles and opportunities for fantasy owners. Evaluating career stats, health, running style, goal line scenarios, and more all factor into how teams use their running backs. As millions of fantasy football owners prepare to draft over the next week, I hope to provide clarity on the current running back situations in both the NFC and AFC. Many of these situations will not change this season except for major injury, while others may be in flux from week to week. Let's start off with the NFC! NFC West St Louis Rams - Committed Daryl Richardson has been named the starter for Week 1 by coach Jeff Fisher. Richardson performed well behind Steven Jackson and should maintain the starting gig if he remains productive. Isaiah Pead has been subpar this preseason, and would stand next in line for carries. San Francisco 49ers - Committed Frank Gore used to be the running back that owners cringed at drafting due to his poor health history. Gore has not missed a game over the last two seasons. Kendall Hunter is likely Gore's backup with LaMichael James running in third. Seattle Seahawks - Committed Marshawn Lynch's career was rejuvenated when he arrived in Seattle. Coming off career highs in total rushing yards and yards per carry, Lynch is a workhorse and will receive the bulk of the carries. Robert Turbin has been productive as Lynch's insurance policy and Christine Michael will also see work especially after a solid preseason. Arizona Cardinals - Committed Rashard Mendenhall missed most of 2012, but found himself back in the starter's role with his new team. Despite having five backs on the roster, including Ryan Williams, Mendenhall is the clear starter and should hold onto the role if he remains healthy. NFC East Dallas Cowboys - Committed DeMarco Murray has the talent and the job, but may lack the necessary durability. Since breaking onto the scene in ...

NFL Prospect Evaluations - March 21 fantasysharks.com Thu 3/21/13 3:00 PM

Joseph Randle , RB, Oklahoma State, 6-foot-1, 200 pounds Joseph Randle PROS: Quick, shifty, experience in passing game - both catching the ball and blocking. CONS: Thin build, runs too tall, struggles finding the hole when the box is stacked, lacks breakaway speed necessary for thinner running backs to thrive. DRAFT BRIEFING: Having difficulty getting a read on how teams value him. My opinion all along has been that the internet likes him more than teams do, but the internet has gone somewhat quiet on his prospects. I think he is picked Day 2, but not until near the end of it. NFL teams do not see three down potential, and, despite his advanced skills in the passing game, that's a problem. 2013 OUTLOOK: I plan to ignore him. His best case involves whoever is in front of him getting hurt, and even then I will bet he shares touches with whatever veteran is on his roster. DYNASTY OUTLOOK: I never rule out a running back until they're drafted, but unless Randle slips to Round 3 he is not on my radar. He is not a three down player and he lacks the game breaking element part time runner's need to be reliable starter's. Kenjon Barner , RB, Oregon, 5-foot-9, 190 pounds Kenjon Barner PROS: Threat to score anytime he touches the ball, explosive, shifty, decisive through the hole, and runs with excellent balance. CONS: The next tackle he breaks will be his first. This can be masked at the college level ... in the pros? Not so much. DRAFT BRIEFING: I expect him to be treated similarly as LaMichael James last year, a luxury Day 2 pick to a team needing an explosive element in the running game. Where he ends up and his expected role will play a big part to his fantasy value. 2013 OUTLOOK: Bleak. He will probably start off as a returner with a select few specialty package plays mixed in, but that's about it. DYNASTY OUTLOOK: Intriguing. Much like his former teammate, James, he will probably have to wait until year two before he shows his true worth. Unlike Randle, he has the game breaking element a part-time player needs to be considered as a RB2 or RB3. He just needs the right situation. Tyler Bray , QB, Tennessee, 6-foot-6, 210 pounds Tyler Bray PROS: Best arm in the draft, tall, can make all the throws. CONS: Total mental midget on and off the field. Awful footwork, doesn't move the pocket well, poor decision making, even worse under duress, ball security, awareness, and, worst of all, has ‘not coachable' issues ...

Monday Morning Takeaways - Divisional Round fantasysharks.com Mon 1/14/13 11:00 AM

Baltimore 38, Denver 35 Ravens This game was an instant classic from the beginning with more twists and turns than the Tilt-O-Whirl at the county fair. Although Joe Flacco may not be an elite fantasy QB1, he certainly played at an elite level with all the chips on the table. Standing tall in the face of pressure, Flacco repeatedly attacked shutdown cornerback Champ Bailey connecting with Torrey Smith for touchdowns of 59 and 32 yards. He then pushed the game into overtime with a 70-yard strike to Jacoby Jones. With complimentary running back Bernard Peirce aggravating a knee injury, Ray Rice came through in the clutch for his team. Handed the rock 30 times, Rice gouged the Broncos defensive line for 131 yards and a touchdown. Just goes to show what Rice can do when Baltimore makes the commitment. Broncos It's a shame that someone had to lose this game, but the Baltimore defense earned it, limiting Peyton Manning to short and intermediate passes all game long. Unable to drive the football, many will speculate that cold weather (13 degrees at kickoff) combined with lingering nerve damage were the culprit. Either way, Manning has continually proved that he is still amongst the top fantasy gun slingers, and should retain such status until he proves otherwise. After becoming the lead pony in Denver's backfield Knowshon Moreno, has been a solid fantasy producer. Unfortunately, Moreno was forced to exit this game with an apparent knee injury. Although the injury doesn't appear serious, it's a reminder that Moreno is a red flag injury risk entering 2013. San Francisco 45, Green Bay 31 49ers Colin Kaepernick is growing before our very own eyes...becoming the epitome of the new style of NFL quarterback. A dual threat on every play, the second year quarterback proved it once again, racking up 263 yards and two touchdowns through the air, and a record breaking 181 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Although hard to speculate his average draft position next season, he is developing into a nice mid QB1. After a roaring start to this game, Frank Gore was seen a bit gimpy coming off the field in the second quarter. This was confirmed as LaMichael James carried the load for much of the second half until Gore reemerged in the late third quarter for big gains capped off by a short yardage touchdown. Normally a steady rotation hurts the running back position, but the Niners high volume run offense supplies enough opportunity that Gore will retain his status...

Waiver Wire Wonders - Week 15 fantasysharks.com Tue 12/11/12 7:00 AM

We unearth a trio of running backs this week that are worth taking a look at, including one that is in line to be the starter again this week. Though none of the three are worthy of being in our highest category, they lead a group of eleven players worth considering at this late juncture in the season. The majority of this week's players are running backs, but as usual we dig up a couple tight ends, and then fill in the rest of the list with some wide outs. There's something for everyone this week! Solid Pickups RB Montell Owens, Jacksonville Drawing the start against the Jets, Owens ran well carrying the ball 14 times for 91 yards and a touchdown. He wasn't as active as we would have liked in the passing game, recording only a single catch for eleven yards but he was the main back for the Jaguars on the field for the majority of offensive plays. With Maurice Jones-Drew and Rashad Jennings both out, it is looking like Owens is in line for a second consecutive start this week at Miami. It's a rarity this late in the season to find a starting running back on the waiver wire, but we expect that Owens will be able to put up similar numbers against the Dolphins this week. RB LaMichael James, San Francisco The backup runner on the 49ers always has value, operating as the change of pace to starter Frank Gore. Finally getting a chance to dress for a game this week against the Dolphins, James did not waste the opportunity, carrying the ball eight times for 30 yards while also catching a pass for 15 yards. Not tremendous numbers, but he did not make any glaring mistakes so he's earned some playing time for the future. San Francisco has cleared the deck for him to be the clear backup by suspending Brandon Jacobs, so James has some value even this late in the fantasy season. RB DuJaun Harris, Green Bay The Packers are not ready to trust Alex Green with the entire load, and with James Starks done for the season, Green Bay used Harris as their change of pace back this past week against the Lions. Harris rushed seven times for 31 yards, and did find the end zone. Coach Mike Sherman flips his backs on a week-to-week basis looking for the "hot hand." Harris will continue to see touches with the potential for him to edge out Green for the majority of carries in Green Bay. On the Radar WR Jonathan Baldwin, Kansas City The Chiefs are having major issues at the wide receiver position, this week placing Dwayne Bowe on season ending injured reserve. That leaves ...

10 Names You Need to Know - Week 15 fantasysharks.com Mon 12/10/12 7:00 AM

The first week of the fantasy playoffs is nearly at an end and if you are still alive and moving forward then congratulations are in order. It also means you either had the Seattle defense/special teams or at least did not face them this week. I'm sure the shellacking that Seattle's defense put on Arizona led many an owner to a first round victory (I'm raising my hand). It was a crazy week and a few names that we've mentioned here fulfilled on their promise as David Wilson, Jason Avant and Joique Bell all had excellent week fourteen performances. Which makes me feel better because it felt like the '10 Names You Need to Know' article was carrying an injury curse after Mohamed Sanu, Cedric Peerman and James Starks all suffered significant injuries after making the list. OK, let's examine some names that stood out this week and whether they are worthy of helping fantasy teams continue their championship run. Rod Streater, WR, OAKLAND: Streater is actually a viable fantasy option heading down the stretch in 2012 as a big play, high-ceiling prospect. Over the past four games Streater has hauled in 10 passes on 18 targets for 233 yards and has scored one touchdown. He is a rookie and suffers from the occasional easy drop and has six for the year but has racked up seven grabs for 196 yards and a score in the last two games alone. The Raiders will continue to trail and be passing the ball a lot while playing catch-up in the second half of games. Streater is 6' 3", 200 pounds and has been the go-to guy for quarterback Carson Palmer of late and that looks to continue moving forward as the Raiders are in talent evaluation mode. Micheal Spurlock, WR, SAN DIEGO: Remember back in training camp when Chargers' soon to be ex- head coach Norv Turner was raving about Eddie Royal? About how sharp his route running was and that he'd be an excellent addition to the passing game. I believe he had in mind the type of performance that Spurlock turned in on Sunday. Seven receptions on seven targets for 64 yards for the much traveled return specialist was a pleasant surprise, especially considering Spurlock was released by the Chargers in October. San Diego had just resigned him the last week in November off of waivers from Jacksonville so this performance came out of nowhere. While it was a very nice week for the journeyman wide receiver, it will not be the norm and do not buy in on Spurlock. Kirk Cousins, QB, WASHINGTON: Cousins has to be on the list until the full extent of ...
