Brought in by the Eagles this offseason to compete for a starting linebacker spot, Brown instead has opted for retirement before the campaign kicks off. With the 26-year-old out of the picture, second-year pro T.J. Edwards has a much easier path to take on middle linebacker for Philly this season.

Brown signed a one-year contract with the Eagles on Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Brown joins a retooled Eagles defense and is expected to compete with Duke Riley, Nate Gerry and T.J. Edwards for a starting job. The 26-year-old put together a productive three-year stretch with the Chargers, compiling 255 tackles, 4.5 sacks and three forced fumbles across 43 games, but injuries and general ineffectiveness against the run ultimately forced him out of the starting lineup in 2019, as Brown would play just 94 defensive snaps after averaging 580 to begin his career. Brown is likely one of the fastest linebackers in the NFL, but with a listed height of 5-foot-11 and weighing just 221 pounds, he might be a bit undersized to be a reliable two-down linebacker, and he never developed enough coverage skills to be effective in the passing game.

Brown posted just 10 tackles (eight solo) in 13 games during the 2019 season.

EDGE Analysis

It's not clear why Brown fell so far down the Chargers' depth chart, but after three straight seasons playing 500 or more defensive snaps it was stunning to see the fourth-year linebacker a healthy inactive for the latter part of 2019. The 25-year-old should make for an intriguing case study on a new team, as Brown is not expected to return to the Chargers after playing out his rookie deal.

Brown is a healthy scratch for Week 8. His inactive status seems to have come as a result of poor tackling during Week 7's loss to the Titans.

It's unclear how Brown will fit in on defense, as Thomas Davis has played every snap so far, while Kyzir White punched in at 89 percent while Uchenna Nwosu has filled in sparingly. It's likely that Brown takes a similar role to Nwosu since Davis and White have looked solid thus far.

Brown was unable to suit up in Week 1 due to the injury, and will have to wait at least another week to make his 2019 debut. His absence likely won't impact the defense too much, considering he's used in more of a depth role on defense and special teams.
