Lions coach Dan Campbell suggested Goff and other key players won't play in Saturday's preseason game against Indianapolis, SI.com's Christian Booher reports.
EDGE Analysis
Goff was sharp in the preseason opener, completing three of four passes for 47 yards to set up a rushing TD for D'Andre Swift. The Detroit offense appears improved this year, with Swift, TE T.J. Hockenson and WR Amon-Ra St. Brown joined by veteran wideout DJ Chark and eventually rookie first-round pick Jameson Williams (knee). The team also has a solid offensive line, though things look less promising on defense, to say the least.

Goff completed three of four passes for 47 yards during Friday's preseason game against Atlanta.
EDGE Analysis
Detroit only let its starting offense play one series, but Goff largely made the most of it by leading a long scoring drive that ended with a D'Andre Swift touchdown. It wouldn't be a surprise if this was the last we see of him until the regular season since the Lions still need to figure out whether to trust Tim Boyle or David Blough with backup quarterback duties before Week 1.

Goff will play in Friday's preseason game versus the Falcons, Bridget Condon of NFL Network reports.
EDGE Analysis
On Monday, coach Dan Campbell implied Goff and the rest of the Lions' healthy starters would log about one quarter of action, and that seemingly will come to pass in the team's first exhibition. He'll thus be working with running backs D'Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams, wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and DJ Chark and tight end T.J. Hockenson.

Lions coach Dan Campbell suggested Goff and other starters will play about one quarter in Friday's preseason game against Atlanta, Tim Twentyman of the team's official site reports.
EDGE Analysis
Campbell also said the Falcons will play their starters, perhaps making this one of the few preseason openers in which the first units take the field. It's not all that surprising, given that they're two of the younger teams in the NFC, led by second-year head coaches and retread, veteran QBs surrounded by mostly young receivers. The Lions did sign DJ Chark this offseason, and Goff also has a nice array of young pass catchers at this disposal, including WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, RB D'Andre Swift and TE T.J. Hockenson, with first-round pick WR Jameson Williams (torn ACL) potentially helping somewhere down the line. The Lions also appear solid up front, giving Goff a much better situation that he had last year, albeit with similar potential for the Detroit defense to be a huge liability. Playing at home Friday night, Goff and Co. should have the edge over a talent-deficient Atlanta defense.

Goff is facing a make-or-break season after Detroit spent its offseason improving his supporting cast without acquiring a potential successor at quarterback, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Lions' front office not only steered clear of the quarterback market in free agency, they did not spend a draft pick on a developmental prospect, either. Instead, they bolstered Goff's receiving options with DJ Chark, first-round rookie Jameson Williams (knee) and tight end James Mitchell (knee). Now, Goff has a fantastic receiving corps to complement a highly-pedigreed offensive line and a capable backfield. If Goff can't succeed within this talented offensive roster, it seems highly likely that Detroit will look for someone who can next offseason, when Goff could be cut with relatively minimal salary cap implications.

General manager Brad Holmes wouldn't firmly commit to Goff being the Lions' long-term solution at quarterback, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports. "Sure, I could see some advantage of there [being] a young quarterback that can learn under Jared," Holmes said Tuesday at the NFL's annual league meeting.
EDGE Analysis
Despite a number of signal-callers signing lucrative deals this offseason, the cap hits on Goff's contract remain in the top 10 among all quarterbacks for each of the next three seasons. However, no guaranteed money is owed to Goff after 2022, and the Lions own plenty of draft capital to potentially use on a developmental prospect this spring, including the Nos. 2, 32, and 34 selections. While Goff should continue as the team's starter for the upcoming campaign, he'll probably need to show dramatic improvement in order to stick around in Detroit any longer than that.

Goff completed 21 of 30 pass attempts for 238 yards and two touchdowns against Green Bay on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
It was a smooth return for Goff following a two-week absence, and he could have had a significantly bigger day if the Lions had called on Goff to throw a trick-play touchdown pass that was instead thrown by backup wideout Tom Kennedy, who hit Kalif Raymond for a 75-yard score. Although his first year with Detroit was difficult at times, the Lions scored 37 points in this game and Goff was never a hindrance to the offense. He finishes the year completing 332 of 494 pass attempts for 3,245 yards (67.2 percent completed, 6.6 yards per attempt), 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Although he'll never be much of a downfield passer and had some ugly moments in 2021, the Lions also struggled to assemble a decent wide receiver rotation until the second half, when rookie Amon-Ra St. Brown broke out and signed Josh Reynolds. There's a chance the Lions could actually build something with this group, and more importantly, Detroit might not be able to acquire an upgrade over Goff before the 2022 season.

Goff (knee) is listed as active Sunday against the Packers.
EDGE Analysis
Coming off a two-game absence in which he had a bout with COVID-19 and dealt with a knee injury that he sustained in his last appearance Week 15 versus the Cardinals, Goff logged three consecutive limited practices in advance of the season finale. It was enough to fulfill coach Dan Campbell's assertion that Goff was probable to play. Goff will look to put a cap on a modest first campaign in Detroit, which so far has included 3,007 yards, 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions on 67 percent passing in 13 appearances.

Goff (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Packers, after Lions coach Dan Campbell said Friday he considers the quarterback "probable" to play.
EDGE Analysis
Campbell expects Goff to play, which isn't necessarily the same as saying he'd have the 'probable' designation if it still existed. Regardless it's best to treat the QB as questionable entering the weekend, considering he didn't play last week and remained limited at practice Wednesday through Friday this week. If he does start, Goff will face a Packers defense that may or may not pull key players at some point. If Goff is out, Tim Boyle will make his fourth and final start of the year, with the Lions and Packers kicking off at 1:00 p.m. ET this Sunday.

Coach Dan Campbell said Goff (knee) is "probable" to play Sunday against the Packers and is expected to start, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Goff was limited at practice Wednesday and Thursday but has apparently shown enough to put him on track to play in the season finale. The 27-year-old has missed the past two games with the bruised knee, which led to Tim Boyle receiving a pair of spot starts. Goff's status will receive another update Friday when the Lions release their official injury report.
