The NFL and the NFLPA have not finalized an agreement on a new drug policy as of late Friday night, but Gordon remains in position to have his suspension reduced -- likely to 10 games -- if an agreement is reached as expected, the Akron Beacon-Journal reports. The NFL's VP of PR Greg Aiello released a statement late Friday night indicating that the agreement has not been finalized, as there are still significant unresolved issues to be sorted out. The 32 player reps voted to approve the agreement earlier in the day Friday, but the NFLPA still needs to finalize the deal despite receiving the representatives' approval. In any case, a reduction to 10 games for a fourth career violation of the proposed new policy for his most recent positive marijuana test, Gordon faces an additional two games as a result of his July 5 DWI charge.

How does Welker's suspension get overturned because it would not have been a suspension with the new policy but Gordon still get suspended when he would not have gotten suspended with the new policy?

sounds bad when they say 4th violation, but really there should not have ever been a 4th, and who knows what the amount was on the first 3 "violations". It's pretty bullsh*t if you ask me.

I also was shocked to hear about him being tested over 70 times this offseason. Sounds pretty ridiculous & stressful to me. To constantly have to worry that something is going to show up and suspend you for a whole year and take millions of dollars from you.. f-- that

Gordon is a repeat offender and Welker is a first timer

William83 Sat 9/13/14 1:46 AM

I know he was a repeat offender and that is why the penalty had escalated to the suspension instead of probation. He was suspended for what is now a negative test. So they are allowing Welker to use the new policy for his punishment but not allowing Gordon to use the new policy for his.

Yes that's bs, I don't see how they can overturn it for certain players and not for others. They're suspending him even though it wasn't technically a positive test if he gets the same treatment as Welker.

its because he tested positive before the new league year(march 6). The new year starts March 11 so this is a 2013 violation not 2014 when the new deal goes retroactive.

William83 Sat 9/13/14 2:06 AM

If that is the reasoning they used he should not have gotten any reduction of his suspension.

JohnnyBlizzard Sat 9/13/14 2:18 AM

This is the NFL we're talking about here. Reason and logic aren't exactly in their vocabulary. They did, after all, only suspend Ray Rice for 2 games for knocking out his girlfriend.

They gotta save face somewhere, right?

William83 Sat 9/13/14 6:53 AM

I guess, but it just seems like they should apply the new policy to any player with a current suspension.

Unless there is an unreported 4th violation, all that has been reported during this very public appeal process is 3 violations in the NFL... 2012 pot, 2013 cough syrup, 2014 the current 16/13.6 fail (that isn't a fail under the new policy)... so even if there is a 4th, the latest one shouldn't be a fail... it makes absolutely no sense. The ironic thing is under the new policy, everyone getting reinstated still failed a test. Gordon, still reportedly getting popped for 10 games, did not (under the new policy). Curious if since they also altered the appeal process (neutral hearing officer) if he can appeal again.

Sethc1020 Sat 9/13/14 8:41 AM

Ive been wondering the same thing as to if he can appeal it? It makes no sense to me either cause it is not a failed test now so how can he be suspended? Welker may have been his first violation but it was for a much worse drug than some pot.

They had no problem being retroactive with ray rice. So if thats the case they need to suspend A.P. for the season for child abuse
