Asiata (groin) was surprisingly announced as Jerick McKinnon's backup for Sunday's game against the Lions, and he finished with just two carries for minus-five yards and one catch on two targets for 18 receiving yards.
Despite starting the last four games in place of Adrian Peterson and scoring three touchdowns in Week 4 against the Falcons, Asiata's time as the starter always seemed to be in jeopardy due to McKinnon's upside. Nothing was announced in the days leading up to the game, but McKinnon played well enough Sunday (11 carries for 40 rushing yards and six catches on six targets for 42 receiving yards) to keep the starting job for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, both backs figure to have a tough time in Week 7, as the Vikings travel to face a Bills defense that is ranked second in the NFL in rushing yards allowed this season.
My league has a deep bench so I will hold on to him while I see what is going on. At the same time I don't think he will be starting for me if he comes back.
If your league has a short bench then I would advise you drop him. You need to find someone can use.
lol, if you have to start Asiata, you can close the book on your season at this point. If you have him as a third option then you did well on your draft pick if you are in need of a bye-week RB for your starter.
Coach Mike Zimmer said he wants to get Matt Asiata more touches this week against the Bills.
Zimmer expanded and added that he wants Jerick McKinnon's touches to come down from Week 6. Against the Lions last Sunday, McKinnon out-touched Asiata 17-3 and out-snapped Asiata 48-15. Zimmer wants that to change because Asiata is "dependable," and added that running backs who can't pass-protect can "get the quarterback killed." We take that as a direct reference to the raw McKinnon. McKinnon is a high-upside stach, while Asiata is a low-upside RB3.
I guess I'll go with what the head coach says. He's planted on my bench I have Forte and Ball (when healthy) ahead of him. I have McKinnon in another league, but he's on the bench this week until you figure things out. As a Vikings fan (unfortunately) I've watched them both. McKinnon is the future and is more exciting, but their O-Line got killed this past week and Asiata is a bigger blocker that helped Bridgewater in other games. McKinnon wasn't able to do that. It's a timeshare basically and in a timeshare I'd want the guy getting the goal line work. I'd keep them both and sit them both until more clarity. You can't start either vs. the #1 ranked Bills D.

McKinnon played pretty good 3.6 YPC.. Asiata the bigger back should have had more carries vs a tough defense

is he a safe drop at this point?

I'd give it at least another week. His groin injury may have been the reason for the rest/demotion.

I have him and don't mind them not using him, but how about some notice? That way I could've taken him out of my starting lineup.

Glad I held onto him. He's not an every week starter, but he is a reliable plodder who gets goal line work and a capable bye week fill in.
PutthatawayWed 10/15/14 5:49 PM
Good luck with that
