Vikings FS Harrison Smith is battling turf toe. Smith exited Sunday's game against the Panthers with what the team called a "foot" injury. Turf toe tends to linger and is a painful ailment. Smith's status for next Monday night's game is up in the air. Andrew Sendejo is his backup.

Vikings FS Harrison Smith is not expected to be suspended for shoving an official in Sunday's win. Smith is expected to escape with only a fine for what he admitted was a "stupid" act. Smith missed 2/3 of yesterday's game, which surely factored into the league's decision not to issue a one-game ban.

Vikings rookie FS Harrison Smith was ejected from Sunday's Week 5 game against the Titans for shoving an official. Smith was ejected in the second quarter after the Vikings defense intercepted Matt Hasselbeck. The first-round pick was jawing with a Tennessee receiver and a referee came into break it up. Smith then proceeded to throw the official out of the way and was subsequently kicked out of the contest. Minnesota is already without safeties Mistral Raymond and Andrew Sendejo.

Coach Leslie Frazier confirms the Vikings are counting on rookie FS Harrison Smith to be a starter. Smith made his first start in Friday's win over the Bills. "We're counting on that. That's one of the reasons we drafted him when we did," Frazier said. "I haven't seen anything, without looking at the tape, that would upset that." Mistral Raymond is ahead of Jamarca Sanford to start opposite the No. 29 pick.

Vikings rookie FS Harrison Smith is beginning to take snaps with the first-team defense. The Vikings started the No. 29 overall pick out with the second team, but Smith wasn't expected to remain with the backups for long. He's currently running ahead of SS Mistral Raymond, but should also steal snaps from FS Jamarca Sanford. Sanford and Raymond are ultimately expected to rotate snaps opposite Smith.

Vikings first-round FS Harrison Smith is working with the second team in the early stages of training camp. "We want him to compete and win that job," coach Leslie Frazier said. "We'll see how it plays out over the next few weeks." Jamarca Sanford and Mistral Raymond are running as the starting safeties...for now. It won't be long before the former Notre Dame standout unseats Sanford at free safety.

Vikings first-rounder Harrison Smith is already taking first-team reps in this week's OTAs. Smith is ready to displace 2011 starter Jamarca Sanford, who is now rotating with Mistral Raymond on the opposite side. Raymond has the early edge in that battle, with fifth-rounder Robert Blanton also factoring in the mix. Smith has worked at both strong and free safety in the Vikes' largely interchangeable two-deep scheme.

Vikings signed rookie FS Harrison Smith, the No. 29 overall pick, to a four-year contract. Like all first-round contracts, the Vikings will hold an option for a fifth year. Smith played linebacker and strong safety at Notre Dame, but the Vikes feel he's got fluid enough hips to start at free safety as a rookie. We'll see about that, while targeting Minnesota's pass defense for fantasy matchup purposes.
