Cherilus, an unrestricted free agent, is contemplating retirement, Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Cherilus hasn't formally decided to retire, but he reportedly isn't looking for a new contract this offseason either. Once the Lions' first-round selection back in 2008, the 32-year-old veteran has played in 132 games across the past nine seasons and was regarded as an above-average offensive lineman during his five years in Detroit. However, his performance largely declined thereafter to where he spent this past season in Tampa Bay as a mere backup. While he seems intent on sitting out at least the 2017 campaign, a return for the 2018 season technically remains in the picture.

The veteran tackle thus starts Week 17 prep on better standing than last week, when he was unable to suit up for the Wednesday session and was ultimately ruled inactive for the Christmas Eve tilt against the Saints. While his improvement is naturally a positive, the even better news for the Bucs at right tackle is that starter Demar Dotson (concussion) is back to full practice participation and apparently on track to play against the Panthers in the season finale on Sunday.

The Buccaneers will have to scramble to find a viable option at right tackle Saturday with both Cherilus and Demar Dotson (concussion) both sidelined. Their deficiency at right tackle was on full display Sunday against the Cowboys as defensive lineman David Irving wreaked havoc on quarterback Jameis Winston in the fourth quarter. Per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, the Buccaneers may be forced to use either Leonard Wester and Kevin Pamphile at right tackle Saturday.

The former Lions' first-round draft pick has been filling in for Demar Dotson (concussion) at right tackle, and with the latter in the concussion protocol, the Bucs may find themselves in dire straits at the position against the Saints on Saturday. Another update regarding Cherilus' status should be available after Thursday's practice.

The Indianapolis Colts released offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus Sunday. Cherilus started 29 games at right tackle the past two seasons, and his absence will likely leave offensive tackle Jack Mewhort as the starter.

The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins made a "serious run" at RT Gosder Cherilus before he signed with the Colts. Cherilus had a Miami visit scheduled before inking with Indy on the first day of free agency. It's little more than an anecdote at this stage, but further indication Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland was jumping from plan to plan to fortify his line before finally signing Tyson Clabo. It's fair to wonder if Cherilus would be a Dolphin had they not been tied up in the Jake Long negotiations early in free agency.

Colts agreed to terms with OT Gosder Cherilus, formerly of the Lions. This is presumably one of the "big announcements" owner Jim Irsay teased on Twitter. Cherilus was stout on the right side for the Lions last season, but is recovering from another knee operation. He's missed just four games in five years, however, and is a strong addition for the Colts' porous line provided he's healthy. This shouldn't be the last move the Colts make with the intention of keeping Andrew Luck upright more often in 2013.

ESPN NFC North blogger Kevin Seifert expects the Lions to "move on" from free agent RT Gosder Cherilus. As does the Detroit Free Press. Cherilus is going on 29, and recovering from another knee procedure. The Lions have three potential replacements in Riley Reiff, Jason Fox and Corey Hilliard. Coming off a strong season, Cherilus will draw interest on the open market.
