Redskins waived or released C Eric Cook, RB Tristan Davis, OL Grant Garner, DL Doug Worthington and CB Travon Bellamy. Cook, a seventh-round pick by the Redskins in 2010, spent his rookie year on the practice squad before sticking on the active roster for all of last season. He'll hit waivers with two career starts under his belt.

Erik Cook has taken over as the Redskins' new starting center with Will Montgomery pushing out to left guard. At 6'6/320, Cook is now the tallest center in he league. He's going to have to work on getting leverage against defensive tackles. The Redskins have new starters at center and the entire left side of the offensive line against the NFL's No. 31 run defense in Carolina.

Toby Gerhart missed all of last week's practices and the Vikings' third preseason game with an ankle/Achilles' injury. It sounds like a day-to-day situation, but is concerning for a back in danger of losing his role. The Vikings may strip Gerhart's third-down back job in favor of Lorenzo Booker. Gerhart isn't worth drafting in 12-team leagues, even by Adrian Peterson owners. The offense would totally collapse without A.P.

The Star-Tribune suggests that Toby Gerhart may lose his third-down role this season. The Brad Childress regime saw third downs as a chance for Gerhart to get on the field. But the new Leslie Frazier staff apparently sees Gerhart as a strict power back that will simply back up Adrian Peterson on early downs. While Gerhart remains Peterson's handcuff, Lorenzo Booker is looking like the passing down option.
