Reed will announce his retirement as an NFL player on Thursday, the Baltimore Sun reports. The nine-time Pro Bowl selection finishes his career with 64 interceptions, which ranks him sixth overall in NFL history in that category. The 36-year-old -- who spend the first 11 years of his distinguished career with the Ravens -- last saw NFL action in 2013, when he played for both the Texans and Jets, notching 48 tackles in 14 games.

ESPN New York reports the Jets have no interest in signing free agent Ed Reed. Reed told reporters earlier this month he hopes to continue playing, but hasn't received any free-agent interest. His best chance at signing with a team could come after Week 1, when base salaries aren't guaranteed. Calvin Pryor, Antonio Allen, and Dawan Landry are entrenched as the Jets' top three safeties. Beat writer Rich Cimini thinks Reed would only be an option should injuries strike.

Free agent Ed Reed, 35, told reporters at Ravens CB Lardarius Webb's annual softball event Sunday that he hopes to continue playing football. It's our first Reed update since mid-February, an indication of how nonexistent NFL interest in him has been. Reed says he's "taking my time," but "still preparing to play," although he doesn't want to participate in training camp. It's possible a safety-needy team would give Reed a look after Week 1, when base salaries are no longer guaranteed. The bottom fell out on Reed's career in 2012. The Texans signed him last offseason to a three-year, $15 million contract on owner Bob McNair's mandate, but released Reed in November. He latched on with the Jets but was ineffective in seven appearances with New York.

ESPN New York doesn't believe free agent S Ed Reed figures into the Jets' immediate plans. The Jets have four safeties under contract, including starters Antonio Allen and Dawan Landry. Beat writer Rich Cimini thinks Reed would simply be a fallback option should the Jets suffer any in-season injuries. Reed has lost many steps and was a weekly burn victim in coverage last season. Ed Reed only played in sub packages during Sunday's Week 16 win over the Browns. Finally, coach Rex Ryan didn't let his infatuation with Reed overtake what's best for his team. Antonio Allen started and Reed exclusively played on passing downs, leading to 30-of-65 snaps. It's too little too late as the washed up future Hall of Famer had played on 85 percent of the snaps in the previous five games, but at least Rex had the guts to make the switch.

Ed Reed says he'd like to play two more years beyond 2013. As ESPN's Jamison Hensley points out, that's amusing, as Reed was constantly "contemplating retirement" when he was in his prime. Reed's play has sunk to depressing depths this season, so there's no guarantee he'll find a taker for 2014. The way he handled his hip injury and time in Houston won't help.

Coach Rex Ryan said Ed Reed will continue to start for the Jets. Reed has played virtually every snap at free safety for the Jets since signing three weeks ago. During that span, E.J. Manuel, Joe Flacco and Ryan Tannehill have combined to go 65-of-97 (67.0 percent) for 849 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. The Jets have lost all three games. "I think Ed gives us the best shot," the ever-loyal Ryan said.

Making his Jets debut Sunday, Ed Reed played on 61-of-69 defensive snaps. The Jets secondary was shredded by E.J. Manuel, who went 20-of-28 for 245 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. It wasn't all Reed's fault of course, but his presence certainly didn't help the secondary. The Ravens and Texans gave up on the future Hall of Famer because he can't run anymore and Sunday's debut won't do anything to squash that notion. Former starter Antonio Allen played just four snaps.
