ESPN's Chris Mortensen stated on NFL Insiders Tuesday that Ravens TE Ed Dickson (hamstring) "most likely won't be ready for the opener."
The Ravens' fears about the severity of Dickson's hamstring tear were essentially confirmed when they signed Dallas Clark. Look for Clark to open the season as Baltimore's "move" tight end, with Visanthe Shiancoe playing on the line in two-tight end packages. Once a somewhat popular fantasy sleeper, Dickson is no longer worth consideration in standard re-draft leagues.

Ravens TE Ed Dickson (torn hamstring) is uncertain if he'll be ready for Week 1.
Coach John Harbaugh had previously said Dickson wasn't in danger of missing Week 1. "You can't rush back those things," Dickson said. "I want to get back out there today, but I don't want to go out and hurt the team and be out for weeks during the regular season." The Ravens' Sunday signing of Dallas Clark suggests they agree with Dickson's assessment. What little sleeper appeal Dickson had in the wake of Dennis Pitta's injury is gone.

Ravens TE Ed Dickson will miss "a week or so" of training camp due to a hamstring injury.
He went down in Sunday's practice. A Monday MRI showed a "slight tear" of Dickson's hamstring, which can be a tricky injury. The Ravens are woefully thin at tight end after also losing Dennis Pitta. Visanthe Shiancoe, Matt Furstenburg, Alex Silvestro, and Billy Bajema are next on the depth chart.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens are using Ed Dickson in Dennis Pitta's old "move" tight end role in training camp practices.
Although Dickson is athletic enough for the role, he's never played with the same kind of short-area movement as Pitta and will be a tougher sell as Baltimore's primary possession receiver. Dickson has also always battled drops and inconsistency. It's still a big opportunity in Dickson's contract year. In his career, Dickson has managed just 10.5 yards per reception and six touchdowns on 86 catches. Dickson has an outside chance at back-end TE1 value.

Ravens contract-year TE Ed Dickson is expected to take on a "larger receiving role" with Dennis Pitta lost for the season.
Dickson came out of Oregon known as an athlete, but he's been a bit of a plodder in the pros and played mostly an in-line position, running far fewer pass routes than his injured teammate. With Visanthe Shiancoe on the roster, Dickson could split out into the slot more this year. We still wouldn't anticipate more than unsteady high-end to mid-range TE2 value from 6-foot-4, 255-pound Dickson.

Ravens re-signed restricted free agent TE Ed Dickson to a one-year, $1.32 million deal.
Dickson didn't draw an offer sheet before the April 19 deadline, so signing his tender was his only choice if he wanted to play football this season. The Ravens' No. 2 pass-catching tight end, Dickson slumped to a 21/225/0 line last season after catching 54 passes for 528 yards and five touchdowns in 2011. He's not going to make a fantasy impact in 2013.

Ravens restricted free agent Ed Dickson has signed an offseason participation agreement to participate in OTAs.
It's a sign Dickson will soon ink his tender, or perhaps sign off on a multi-year deal. Assistant GM Eric DeCosta recently singled out Dickson as a player the Ravens expect to "take a step forward this season." Dickson has yet to be a consistent fantasy threat in his three-year career, and that won't change in 2013.
