Holloman (neck) was waived by the Cowboys on Thursday, Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post reports. The Cowboys will likely try to reach an injury settlement with Holloman, whose career is probably over after he suffered a serious neck injury in the preseason. Prior to going down, Holloman appeared to be in line to replace the injured Sean Lee as a starter at outside linebacker.

Holloman's NFL career is likely over following his latest neck injury, ESPN Dallas reports. Holloman suffered a neck injury during last Saturday's preseason game, which came after the linebacker missed seven games last season with a spinal contusion. The most recent occurrence unfortunately compounded Holloman's medical condition and continuing to play football would present a considerable risk to Holloman. As such, the linebacker's NFL career will likely come to a close after playing just nine games as a rookie last year.

Holloman suffered a neck injury during Saturday's game and has drawn concern from the Cowboys' organization regarding his playing status moving forward, the Dallas Morning News reports. Holloman missed seven games last season with a spinal contusion, so Saturday's second neck injury comes with fear for his future. When asked about if he's worried that the linebacker's injury is career-threatening, Cowboys' coach Jason Garrett said, "We just got to see what the doctors say." As such, it sounds like Dallas' medical staff still has some work to do to provide a more definitive diagnosis on Holloman.

Bryan Broaddus of the Cowboys' official website considers second-year LB DeVonte Holloman the "best first option" to replace Sean Lee (knee) at middle linebacker. Holloman, the 185th pick in last year's draft, started the final two games at MIKE last season while Lee was on the shelf. He was in a bit over his head but was billed as a strong cover linebacker coming out of South Carolina. Other options to replace Lee could be rookies Anthony Hitchens and Will Smith.

Cowboys signed No. 185 pick LB DeVonte Hollman to a four-year contract. A late-round sleeper per Rotoworld college prospects guru Josh Norris, Holloman has ideal strong-side linebacker traits at 6-foot-1 3/8 and 243 pounds with experience in pass coverage. Dallas has a long-term need at SAM linebacker, as current starter Justin Durant is only a short-term fix.
