Mayo announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 2015 fifth-round pick out of Texas State played in nine NFL seasons, starting his career with the Panthers before stints with the Giants and Commanders. Mayo's most productive season came in 2019 with the Giants, when he logged 82 tackles (52 solo), including 2.0 sacks, two pass defenses and one fumble recovery across 16 regular-season games. He last played for Washington in 2023, and after not being able to catch on with a team in 2024, Mayo has elected to hang up his cleats.

Mayo started five of 17 games in 2023 and recorded 59 tackles (39 solo) and two sacks.
EDGE Analysis
The 30-year-old linebacker played 350 defensive snaps, which was just 30 percent of the team total but the second most of his career (631 in 2019 with the Giants). Mayo is scheduled for unrestricted free agency this offseason and shouldn't have much trouble finding work given that he's topped 200 special teams snaps in nine consecutive seasons since entering the NFL as a fifth-round pick with Carolina in 2015.

Mayo logged eight total tackles (six solo), including two tackles for loss in Sunday's 27-10 loss to the 49ers.
EDGE Analysis
Mayo has seen increased time on the Commanders' defense with Jamin Davis (shoulder) on injured reserve, and he's been productive since given the opportunity. The veteran outside linebacker posted his second consecutive eight-tackle performance in Week 17, bringing his season total up to 55 stops. Expect Mayo and Washington's defense to try and end its season on a positive note in Week 18 against the Cowboys.

Mayo tallied eight tackles (three solo) in Sunday's Week 16 loss to the Jets.
EDGE Analysis
Mayo had been relegated to special-teams work each of Washington's previous three contests, but he logged 25 defensive snaps versus New York with Jamin Davis (shoulder) on IR. Mayo made the most of the opportunity, tallying his highest tackle total since Week 8 against Philadelphia. He's up to 47 stops on the campaign, the second-most of his nine-year NFL career.

Mayo recorded six tackles (five solo) including two sacks in Sunday's 31-19 loss versus the Giants.
EDGE Analysis
Mayo tallied multiple sacks in a single game for the first time in his career in Week 11, both of them coming in the first quarter. With Cody Barton (ankle) expected to return to action soon, Mayo is not an IDP option in most formats moving forward.

Mayo registered nine tackles (six solo) in Sunday's 38-31 loss to the Eagles.
EDGE Analysis
Mayo got the start Sunday with Cody Barton (ankle) placed on IR Saturday. Mayo followed up his 11-tackle performance in Week 7 with nine tackles in Week 8 that led the team. He played 54 defensive snaps Sunday and will continue to see the field with Barton set to miss at least the next three games.

Mayo will start at linebacker in Sunday's game versus Philadelphia, Zach Selby of the Commanders' official site reports.
EDGE Analysis
With Cody Barton (ankle) out, Mayo will get the call as the next man up at linebacker in Week 8. He recorded 11 tackles after he took over for Barton in Week 7, so he holds some IDP appeal against the run-heavy Eagles.

Mayo recorded 11 tackles (nine solo) in Sunday's 14-7 loss to the Giants.
EDGE Analysis
Mayo saw increased playing time after Cody Barton left the game with an ankle injury and had his most productive game of the season. The 30-year-old Mayo led the team in tackles and could start at linebacker if Barton ends up missing extended time.

Mayo registered 34 tackles (14 solo), including one sack, while playing in 13 games (three starts) during the 2022 season.
EDGE Analysis
Mayo saw the majority of his playing time this season on special teams, but he still started Washington's final three games as Cole Holcomb (foot) and Jon Bostic (pectoral) were both out with injuries. The eighth-year pro was effective in his limited playing time, as he amassed 25 tackles and a sack during that three-game span. With his contract set to expire this offseason, Mayo will provide value on special teams and as a reserve linebacker to whichever team he ends up in 2023.

Mayo recorded eight tackles (five solo), including one sack, in Sunday's 24-10 loss to Cleveland.
EDGE Analysis
Mayo recorded his first sack of the season, bringing down Washington signal-caller Deshaun Watson for a one-yard loss in the first quarter. The 29-year-old has now recorded 17 tackles since stepping up for injured linebacker Jon Bostic (pectoral) over the past two weeks. Mayo has also played at least 88 percent of defensive snaps in each of the past two games, and he should continue to slot into a prominent role alongside leading tackler Jamin Davis in Week 18 versus the Cowboys.
