The 49ers will stick with K David Akers for the Super Bowl. Akers missed yet another kick in Sunday's NFC Championship escape - shanking it off the uprights - but will remain a man of nine lives. Akers has missed at least one field-goal attempt in seven of 10 games since the 49ers' Week 9 bye. San Francisco can only hope it doesn't have the next Scott Norwood (or Ray Finkle) on its hands.

Coach Jim Harbaugh announced that David Akers will kick for the 49ers in Saturday's Divisional round game versus the Packers. Although Billy Cundiff lost the kicking competition, he will remain on the roster as insurance. Harbaugh said Akers gives the 49ers the "best chance to win," which doesn't say much for Cundiff. Owners who poached Cundiff off the waiver wire for the fantasy playoffs are out of luck.

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said there's a "good chance" both David Akers and Billy Cundiff will be on the roster this weekend. Harbaugh added that there is a "leader in the clubhouse," but he wouldn't name names and didn't specify if both would be active for Saturday's Divisional Round game versus the Packers. Akers and Cundiff were taking their duel to Candlestick Park on Monday afternoon. We likely won't know much more until late in the week.

David Akers (pelvis) revealed Thursday that he underwent surgery last February for a double sports hernia. Complications from that surgery have been behind his struggles of late. Akers was shaky on the first day of his kicking competition while Billy Cundiff showed a stronger and more accurate leg. "The telling sign to me is the fact he's missing them wide left, which means he's not getting his hips through the ball," ex-49ers kicker Joe Nedney said of Akers. "He's not swinging confidently through the ball." It's premature to predict a winner here, but Cundiff appears to have the edge.

According to CSN Bay Area, newly signed Billy Cundiff will compete with David Akers in practices to determine who kicks in the playoffs. It would be no contest if Akers was healthy. Kicking through a pelvis injury, however, he's rivaled Mason Crosby as the least reliable kicker in the league over the past two months. Until a winner is announced, the 49ers kicking situation is one to avoid in playoff fantasy leagues.

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh plans to bring in kickers for tryouts this week. David Akers remains on San Francisco's 53-man roster for now, but the Niners are understandably dissatisfied with a kicker who shanked 13 regular season field goals. The 49ers did clinch a first-round bye in the NFC, so they have two weeks to evaluate their placekicking situation before the Divisional Round.

When asked if the 49ers need to make a kicking change before the playoffs, head coach Jim Harbaugh said, "We'll evaluate the position." It's the first time Harbaugh has wavered on the topic of David Akers. Throughout the season he had been adamant that the team was not looking to replace the 38-year-old. However, Akers missed from 44 and 40 yards out in Week 17 and wrapped up the regular season hitting just 29-of-42 kicks. "It's his job to make the field goals, you know," added Harbuagh. The 49ers earned a first-round bye for the playoffs, so they'll have two weeks to make a decision.

When asked he is thinking about making a kicking change, coach Jim Harbaugh said, "No, not at this time." It certainly wasn't a vote of confidence for David Akers, who missed a 39-yard attempt against the Patriots and is just 25-of-35 on the season. "Specialists sometimes only get four or five opportunities a game, and you've got to make the play," Harbaugh said Monday. "You've got to see him do it, got to see him make those plays." Fantasy owners should be looking for more stable options.

The 49ers are sticking with David Akers (pelvis) at kicker. Akers missed yet another field goal in Sunday's loss - a potential game-winning kick in overtime - but coach Jim Harbaugh believes the attempt was "well-struck." Although Akers' struggles are supposedly the result of a pelvis injury, that doesn't make his 21-of-30 field-goal success rate any more palatable. The 49ers are willing to risk Akers costing them more games, but fantasy owners shouldn't be.

David Akers (pelvis) is active for Week 13 against the Rams. Akers was billed as "questionable" earlier in the week, but will be kicking for the 49ers on the Edward Jones Dome's artificial turf. Akers missed two field goals in the Superdome in Week 12, however, and is just 19-of-27 on the year. One more bad game, and he might be shown the door.
