Free agent Daunte Culpepper conceded to the Orlando Sentinel that he's finished playing in the NFL.
The 49ers considered signing Culpepper in 2011 training camp, but only to be a third-stringer behind Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick. They eventually went in another direction (Scott Tolzien). "As far as me playing, I think I am done," said Culpepper, 35. "That part of my book is closed. The next chapter is, I have kids and I will be coaching them." The 11th overall pick in the 1999 draft, Culpepper was a three-time Pro Bowler and finished his career with a 149:106 TD-to-INT ratio, along with 34 more rushing touchdowns. He ranked either first or second among fantasy quarterbacks four times in the early 2000s.

Updating a previous item, the 49ers will not be signing free agent Daunte Culpepper right now, a source tells ProFootballTalk.com.
According to PFT's source, the signing still could happen in the next week or so if Culpepper isn't scooped up by another team. It's unclear why the Niners suddenly backed off the 34-year-old, but maybe he thinks he can reach higher on the depth chart. San Francisco was only offering the third-string gig behind Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick.

A source tells CSN Bay Area that the 49ers plan to sign free agent Daunte Culpepper to a one-year contract.
The move obviously reeks of desperation, but at least the 49ers are acknowledging a problem. They're not going to go anywhere with Alex Smith at quarterback. Per CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, however, the Niners would only view Culpepper as a third-stringer with experience who could play in a pinch if needed. The 34-year-old would not be added to compete for the starting job.

Free agent Daunte Culpepper wants to get back into the NFL.
Culpepper spent last season in the UFL, playing for coach Dennis Green with the Sacramento Mountain Lions. He's now 34 and looked extremely shaky when last starting games for the Detroit Lions in 2009. There is a dearth of quarterback talent in the NFL right now, but Culpepper is a borderline NFL player at this point.
