Giants signed CB Dante Hughes, previously of the Chargers. Hughes will provide practice depth following the release of an injured Brian Witherspoon. If he makes the roster, however, it will be due to his special teams coverage.

The Chargers are expected to release CB Dante Hughes before free agency. Hughes is owed $1 million and got smoked in slot coverage last season, eventually losing playing time to rookie Marcus Gilchrist. Quentin Jammer, Antoine Cason, and Gilchrist will be the team's top three corners in 2012.

Dante Hughes projects as the Chargers' No. 1 nickel corner to open the season. Hughes was the Colts' third-round pick in 2007, but has been stuck on the Chargers' practice squad for much of the last two seasons. He's now ready for a major role behind starters Antoine Cason and Quentin Jammer.
