The Saints signed Sorensen to their practice squad Wednesday, John Hendrix of SI.com reports.

The 33-year-old veteran appeared in all 17 games for New Orleans last season, making a pair of starts, so he's familiar with the defensive system. Sorensen is a sensible addition with Marcus Maye suspended and Jordan Howden dealing with a finger injury.

Sorensen spent his first eight seasons in the NFL with the Chiefs and finished the 2021 campaign with 51 tackles, eight pass deflections, two interceptions and one sack across 17 appearances. The Saints also signed Marcus Maye (Achilles) this offseason to attempt to replace Marcus Williams, but if Maye isn't fully cleared by Week 1, Sorensen figures to be the next man up.

Sorensen is expected to move into a reserve role Sunday in Washington, with Juan Thornhill replacing him as the Chiefs' starting free safety, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Sorensen's benching comes after he was primarily responsible for a 61-yard reception by Stefon Diggs and 53-yard touchdown catch by Dawson Knox in the Chiefs' 38-20 loss to the Bills last week. Though the Chiefs' vulnerable pass defense had presented plenty of tackling opportunities for Sorensen -- he racked up 35 stops through five games -- the 31-year-old has been highly unproductive from a real-life standpoint, as Pro Football Focus has graded him 83rd among the 85 safeties with at least 100 snaps this season.

Sorensen had nine solo tackles during Kansas City's win over Philadelphia in Week 4.

EDGE Analysis

Sorensen has had a productive three weeks in terms of stops, bringing him up to 23 tackles on the year. The veteran safety also has one sack and one pass breakup. Given his near every-down workload, Sorensen will be in the mix as a fairly high upside IDP asset during Week 5's matchup against the Bills.

Sorenson posted seven tackles (five solo) and a pass breakup in Sunday's 30-24 loss to the Chargers.

EDGE Analysis

Sorenson has now produced 21 tackles, a sack and a pass breakup through three contests. The BYU product is producing consistently and maintains some IDP utility as a result, though fellow safety Tyrann Mathieu is certainly more appealing.

Sorenson posted 10 tackles and a sack in Sunday's 36-35 loss to the Ravens.

EDGE Analysis

Sorenson notched his first sack since the 2017 season and he matched last year's season high for tackles in the same game. The BYU product registered a career-high 91 stops last season, and he's on a strong path to match that with 14 tackles through two weeks.

Sorensen re-signed with the Chiefs on a one-year, $2.4 million contract Thursday, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.

Sorensen, who's suited up with the team for the past seven seasons, will return to Kansas City after compiling a career high in tackles (91) during the 2020 campaign. Additionally, the 31-year-old posted five pass breakups, two forced fumbles and three interceptions in his 15 games last season. Sorensen will return to his prominent role in the Chiefs' secondary in 2021.

Sorensen racked up 91 tackles (68 solo) over 15 regular-season games and added a trio of interceptions during the 2020 campaign.

EDGE Analysis

Not only did Sorenson lead the team in tackles by a wide margin, but he also had a nose for the football in 2020, notching two forced fumbles to go along with his three interceptions despite starting just 11 of the 15 games he appeared in. Sorensen's contract expires this offseason, so there is no guarantee he will be in a Chiefs uniform come 2021.
