Taylor has undergone sports hernia surgery and will be sidelined until training camp, NJ.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Taylor was working with the Giants' first-team defense at free safety earlier this spring, but will now be sidelined after his latest surgery. Typically, sports hernia surgery requires four-to-six weeks of recovery time, and the Giants open training camp in five weeks. That puts Taylor on the fringe of being ready once camp starts, but until then, teammates Nat Berhe, Bennett Jackson and rookie third-rounder Darian Thompson figure to benefit from extra practice reps.

Taylor is slated to have surgery on his foot, which could land him on injured reserved, NY Daily News reports. Taylor, a fifth-round draft pick last year, suffered an injury to his sesamoid bone in the Giants' second preseason game. Last season, he played in a reserve role at safety, while also contributing on special teams. He finished his 2013 campaign with four tackles in 10 games. Taylor was looking to crack the rotation again this year and was in line to back up Antrel Rolle at the safety position, but the surgery could cost him the season and he may have to wait another year for a chance at a more significant role with the Giants.

Giants placed S/LB Cooper Taylor (hamstring, shoulder) on injured reserve, ending his season. They activated OL Eric Herman from the practice squad to fill Taylor's roster spot. A fifth-round pick out of Richmond, Taylor was a core special teamer as a rookie. He'll have a chance to compete for playing time on defense in 2014, likely as a linebacker-type player in dime sub-packages.

Giants agreed to terms with No. 152 overall pick S Cooper Taylor on a four-year, $2.34 million contract. An imposing 6-foot-4, 228 pounds with 4.49 wheels, Taylor could also see time at weak-side linebacker. Coach Tom Coughlin expects Taylor to compete for time in the Giants' three-safety package, but the majority of his snaps should come on special teams.

Both GM Jerry Reese and coach Tom Coughlin mentioned fifth-round pick Cooper Taylor as a candidate for the Giants' three-safety package in addition to playing special teams as a rookie. Taylor goes 6-foot-4, 228 with 4.49 wheels. He was viewed as a linebacker prospect by some teams. "He is a safety by trade but you drop him down in that three-safety package or whatever you want to do," said Coughlin. "Whether he plays an outside backer or whatever." Taylor will have to earn the job in camp.
