Kessler completed five of six passes for 27 yards during Friday's loss against the Buccaneers.
EDGE Analysis
Most of Kessler's throws went for short yardage with his longest completion going for seven yards. The QB out of USC is entering his first season and doesn't figure to get much playing time out of the gate. The 23-year-old is listed as Cleveland's third-string QB, and that probably won't change unless Robert Griffin and/or Josh McCown suffers an injury.

Kessler has made a good first impression on coach Hue Jackson, but it's too soon to tell where he'll stand after the Browns' upcoming quarterback competition, Cleveland.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Kessler was drafted in the third round of last month's draft and will compete with fellow quarterbacks Robert Griffin and Josh McCown for pegging on the Browns' depth chart. The former USC standout reportedly impressed with his accuracy and footwork during rookie practices last week, but coach Jackson deemed it too soon to project whether Kessler can or can't win Cleveland's starting job. Rather, the Browns' upcoming OTAs and subsequent training camp is expected to sort out their competition at the position. In any case, Kessler has helped himself by showing well in his chances thus far.

Browns head of football operations Sashi Brown suggests that Kessler has a chance to compete for the team's starting QB job, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
EDGE Analysis
In response to the notion that Kessler isn't in the mix to make a run at the assignment, Brown noted, "I beg to differ with that. I do think Cody is a guy that I would not want to sleep on at all if I wanted to be the starting quarterback of the Browns." With that in mind, Kessler joins a QB depth chart that currently also rosters presumed starter Robert Griffin, as well as Josh McCown, Austin Davis and Connor Shaw. While it would be a big upset to see Kessler overtake Griffin in the short-term, Brown's comments indicate that the team's plans for Kessler are not limited to grooming him for backup duties at the NFL level. Meanwhile, when it comes time to thin out the team's crowded QB situation, it continues to appear likely that the 36-year-old McCown is a candidate to land elsewhere.

The Browns selected Kessler in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft, 93rd overall.
EDGE Analysis
Kessler wasn't expected to go until the sixth or seventh round, so this will generally be regarded as a reach. Kessler is undersized at 6-foot-1, 220 pounds and doesn't have standout athleticism or throwing talent to make up for it. He mostly profiles as a backup in the NFL.
