As a result, Kessler should reclaim Cleveland's quarterback position for this weekend's game versus the Titans, representing a relief for the Browns in wake of another injury incident at the position. At the moment, it's unclear if Kessler's practice participation will be impacted by Sunday's scare, so his involvement as the week unfolds should still be worthwhile to monitor.

Kessler (chest) will require further testing of his ribs and chest on Monday in order to determine the extent of his injury, Cleveland.com reports.

Kessler had X-rays taken during the game and the results of which came back negative. However, after returning to the sidelines to try throwing passes, he was clearly wincing in pain and ultimately ruled out for the remainder of the contest. Consequently, Kessler will require either an MRI or CT scan on Monday to pinpoint what's wrong.

With Kessler forced out of Sunday's game, Charlie Whitehurst took over at QB for the Browns, but not until after wideout Terrelle Pryor saw a couple of snaps as the team's signal-caller in relief of Kessler.

More responsibility was put on Kessler's shoulders in his second career start, and the rookie handled it well. He threw a nice nine-yard touchdown pass (his first in the NFL) to Terrelle Pryor in the second quarter, and spread the ball around effectively by targeting eight different receivers. Ball security continues to be an issue for Kessler, though, as he fumbled for the second consecutive game and was picked off by Josh Norman on a ball thrown behind Pryor. Nonetheless, for a rookie who started the season as the Browns' third-string QB, Kessler has been able to hold his own, and he'll look to progress even more in Week 5 against the Patriots.

Kessler continuing in the Browns' starting job comes as no surprise, as veteran Josh McCown (collarbone) still isn't available following his Week 2 injury. In his first career start Sunday, Kessler completed 21 of 33 passes for 244 yards, but lost a fumble in Cleveland's overtime loss. He'll look to improve on that performance when facing the Redskins this Sunday.

Kessler was a bit shaken up after taking a hard hit, which led to initial concern about a concussion. He was deemed to be okay, escaping with nothing more than some soreness in his arm. He finished out Sunday's game and should be fine for Week 4, but his care-taker role will likely leave him near the bottom of the QB rankings on a weekly basis. Kessler may also continue to lose some snaps to Terrelle Pryor, who attempted five passes during Sunday's game, in addition to taking four carries and drawing a team-high 14 targets.

The fact that the rookie former third-stringer had the Browns in position to win the game in the closing seconds was impressive, as was his command of Cleveland's offense. The problem, of course is a dearth of weapons outside Terrelle Pryor - who took over for Kessler at quarterback throughout points in the game. Things might change once Josh Gordon and Corey Coleman return, but right now it's hard to imagine Cleveland putting much on Kessler's plate aside from managing the game and avoiding big mistakes.

Kessler's fast track to Cleveland's starting job comes after both Robert Griffin and Josh McCown suffered shoulder injuries through the season's first two weeks. That leaves Kessler as the lone quarterback left on the Browns' roster, thus making him the team's starter for this Sunday's game versus the Dolphins. A rookie third-round pick, Kessler completed 19 of 28 passes for 92 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions during the preseason, but has yet to take a regular season NFL snap. Although fellow rookie Corey Coleman, wideouts Terrelle Pryor and Andrew Hawkins, and tight end Gary Barnidge gives Kessler ample targets to choose from, a road start forced so early in his career could result in running backs Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson being utilized more often than usual this Sunday.

Head coach Hue Jackson said that the Browns will stick with the quarterbacks they currently have on the roster for the time being, but a move to add some much-needed QB depth could be on the horizon. Kessler is just one injury away from commanding the offense, but based on his performance in the preseason, the rookie would benefit from more time on the sideline.

Kessler completed 10 of 17 passes for just 40 yards Thursday against the Bears. He was also sacked three times.

EDGE Analysis

Kessler's been unimpressive throughout the preseason, and Thursday night was no different. His completion percentage (58.8) was admirable, but his yards per attempt (2.4) left much to be desired. He'll begin the season as Cleveland's third quarterback behind Robert Griffin and Josh McCown, and even though the latter has been involved in trade rumors, they are unlikely to come to fruition.
