It's not a very surprising move considering the team re-signed Josh McCown and signed Teddy Bridgewater this offseason. Petty will now be on the open market looking for a potential backup quarterback job, but he doesn't have much to hang his hat on, as he threw three touchdowns and seven interceptions in six appearances this past season.

Petty is being mentioned in trade talks after the Jets selected quarterback Sam Darnold in the first round of the draft, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports.

The Jets now have five quarterbacks with Darnold on the roster, and teams usually only carry four of them during the offseason. It isn't clear what sort of compensation New York could receive in return for the quarterback, but the asking price likely isn't very expensive.

Petty started the final three games of the regular season in place of the injured Josh McCown (hand), completing 55 of 112 passes for one touchdown and three interceptions for the year. He was used almost exclusively as a backup during his time in New York, and while he always stayed ahead of Christian Hackenberg on the depth chart, there were very few glimpses of legitimate fantasy upside. Despite McCown heading for free agency, it became very clear that Petty was not going to be the quarterback of the future for the Jets, so his eventual release should come as no surprise.

Petty completed 19 of 36 passes for 232 yards during Sunday's 26-6 loss to the Patriots. He fumbled during the contest.

EDGE Analysis

The fact that Sunday's ho-hum performance was Petty's best of the season from a rating, yardage, and yards-per-attempt perspective tells you all that you need to know about the Baylor product. In seven occasions for extended playing time in two seasons, Petty has yet to reach a quarterback rating of 80. He figures to be no more than a backup next season.

Petty is still in line to start Sunday's game in New England, but Jets head coach Todd Bowles acknowledged that Christian Hackenberg might also get some playing time, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Since taking over for Josh McCown midway through a Week 14 defeat at Denver, Petty has completed 47 percent of his throws, averaged 4.1 yards per pass attempt and posted one touchdown versus three interceptions. Despite the dour numbers, Bowles isn't ready to replace Petty with second-year QB Christian Hackenberg.
