Giants released CB Brian Williams. Williams was signed as depth when Terrell Thomas (ACL) went down for the season in August. He ended up making one tackle in four games. Williams' release could mean that Prince Amukamara (foot) is closer to a return than the Giants are letting on.

Giants signed CB Brian Williams, formerly of the Falcons. Williams, 32, served as the Falcons' slot corner for most of last season, beating out Chris Owens for snaps. Covering the slot was going to be one of Terrell Thomas' tasks on passing downs before his ACL tear. Williams struggles in coverage after several knee and leg injuries. He may have to be New York's nickel back for the first month with Prince Amukamara out until Week 5.

The Giants worked out free agent CBs Brian Williams and Lito Sheppard on Wednesday. Williams is 32 and Sheppard 30. The latter is familiar with a Giants-type defensive scheme after spending most of his career with the Eagles, though Sheppard's performance has fallen off dramatically since those years. Despite his age, Williams has been a more effective player in recent seasons.
