He went on a run early in the third quarter as the Mavericks regained the lead but it was not enough as the team was outscored 13-0 to end the game. Matthews also chipped in with a season-high two blocked shots, however, this is more of a bonus for owners rather than something that should be expected. He has been hot and cold over the past two weeks and if you are able to stomach his in-efficiency from the field, he is generally a nice source of three-pointers and some occasional steals.

The veteran wing finds himself in a brutal slump, shooting 32.1 percent (17-for-53) from the floor and 18.2 percent (4-for-22) from three-point range over the last four games. Matthews has been able to soften the blow to his fantasy value on the defensive end, and he should find his shot again sooner or later, but in most formats if he's not draining threes, he's not worth an active roster spot.

Matthews was effective on both ends of the court, tallying solid stats in the process. He is in the midst of his best month of the season (by far), and the Mavericks appear intent on showcasing the veteran wing in hopes that a playoff contender will make a decent offer. Fantasy owners will likely have to hope that doesn't come to fruition, as his value would almost certainly take a hit.

Factoring in Saturday's contest, the veteran has drained just one of his seven three-point attempts over the last two games following an impressive 7-for-14 tally from distance against the Rockets last Wednesday.

Matthews hasn't been the same player since he tore his Achilles three years ago, but performances like this show the sort of upside he can provide. What has been consistent with Matthews are his minutes, as he's playing over 34 minutes per game. With a lack of options in this weak Dallas offense, Matthews may be asked to take on a bigger load, as he's set a season-high in scoring three times in his last eight games.

Matthews tallied 23 points (7-15 FG, 3-9 3Pt, 6-8 FT), five rebounds, two assists and a steal in 38 minutes during Saturday's 117-108 loss to the Trail Blazers.

EDGE Analysis

Matthews received a warm round of applause from the Portland crowd as he had six successful seasons with the team before being shipped to Dallas in 2015. Saturday's performance marked his third-best scoring total of the season and like most shooting guards, his overall fantasy success depends on scoring production, and while Matthews has had streaks of consistency, he can find himself as an afterthought in several of Dallas' games this season. He does enough to be considered in most seasonal leagues as a third or fourth option at guard, but he needs to have a good matchup to be used widely in DFS formats.

Matthews recorded 22 points (7-11 FG, 7-10 3 Pt, 1-2 FT), five rebounds and four assists in 38 minutes during Wednesday's 125-122 loss to the Warriors.

EDGE Analysis

All of Matthews' seven field goals were from long range which helped boost his points total. While he is known for shooting threes, he still only ranks 25th among shooting guards in 3-point percentage. Matthews won't typically be among the leading scorers for Dallas unless he's shooting hot like he did in this game. He's not a heavy contributor in other categories, which hinders his fantasy value.

The veteran shooting guard was firing away in trademark fashion Friday, with the game marking his eighth with multiple threes over 15 December contests. Matthews has had the hot hand over the last two games as well, draining 12 of his 21 shots during that span, including five of 11 from three-point range. After a pair of sub-40 percent shooting campaigns in his first two years in Dallas, Matthews has bounced back to produce a 40.1 percent figure through the first 37 games of the current campaign that nevertheless still has plenty of room for improvement.
