Mays, who was waived by Portland on Saturday, has quickly found a new home, joining Dylan Windler as a new addition to the Lakers' roster. The Lakers' point guard struggles have been well-documented this year, with LeBron James ultimately taking the reins from D'Angelo Russell, who was benched in mid-December. Mays doesn't have a clear path to playing time and will likely spend most of his time at the G League level, but he does bolster the Lakers' guard depth and could crack the rotation if the struggles continue.

The Trail Blazers waived Mays on Saturday.

Mays averaged 6.3 points, 3.6 assists and 1.8 rebounds in 17.0 minutes across 21 appearances with Portland in 2023-24. Most of Mays' playing time came earlier in the season while Portland was shorthanded in the backcourt, but his opportunities have become more scarce of late while all of Anfernee Simons, Malcolm Brogdon, Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe have been healthy. The Trail Blazers evidently decided that his roster spot could better be utilized on another player.

Mays had zero points (0-8 FG, 0-4 3Pt), three rebounds and one steal over 14 minutes during Thursday's 118-105 loss to the Spurs.

EDGE Analysis

An absence from Anfernee Simons (illness) resulted in Mays seeing his most minutes since Dec. 14 against the Jazz. However, Mays was off his game, missing all eight shot attempts. In fact, the point guard hasn't made a field goal since Nov. 21. He's only likely to have fantasy relevance again if injuries decimate Portland's backcourt.

Mays will return to the bench for Tuesday's game against the Suns.

EDGE Analysis

Malcolm Brogdon (hamstring) is returning from a five-game absence and is back with the starters. Mays has played really well for Portland in recent games, so it's likely that he maintains a decent role until Scoot Henderson (ankle) gets clearance.

Mays ended Friday's 107-95 loss to the Lakers with 15 points (6-14 FG, 3-7 3Pt), five rebounds, eight assists and two steals over 26 minutes.

EDGE Analysis

Mays started again in the absence of Scoot Henderson (ankle) and Malcolm Brogdon (hamstring), and he put up his fourth double-digit scoring effort over his past five games. The fourth-year point guard also led the Blazers with eight assists, and he's averaging a shiny 9.0 dimes during that five-game stretch. The returns of Brogdon and Henderson will eventually eat into Mays' opportunities, but as long as he's playing 30-plus minutes per game he's worth a look in fantasy as an assist specialist capable of sprinkling in modest scoring with non-destructive shooting percentages.

Mays closed with six points (3-8 FG, 0-1 3Pt), 10 assists, five rebounds and two blocks across 31 minutes during Tuesday's 115-99 loss to the Jazz.

Since Malcolm Brogdon went down with a hamstring injury early in the Trail Blazers' 121-118 loss to the Kings on Nov. 8, Mays has proven to be an elite source of assists. He came off the bench against Sacramento to dish out 11 assists, that dropped 12 and 10 dimes in his first two starts of the season. With Scoot Henderson (ankle) likely out until at least late November and Brogdon at risk of missing additional contests, Mays will be worthy of a roster spot in most leagues while he has a clear path to 30-plus minutes as the Blazers' starting point guard.

Mays posted 15 points (7-13 FG, 0-4 3Pt, 1-2 FT), 12 assists and four rebounds over 33 minutes during Sunday's 116-110 loss to the Lakers.

EDGE Analysis

Making his first start of the season with Scoot Henderson (ankle) set to miss 2-to-3 more weeks and Malcolm Brogdon (hamstring) also day-to-day, Mays proved to be an excellent fantasy option for managers who streamed him for assists. With Anfernee Simons (thumb) also out indefinitely and Brogdon likely to miss more time given his durability concerns, Mays could continue to produce for managers as Portland opens a four-game week. During six late-season starts in 2022-23 with the Trail Blazers, Mays posted averages of 15.3 points, 8.3 assists, 3.2 rebounds, 2.0 three-pointers and 1.0 steals in 31.5 minutes while shooting 50 percent from the field and 92.3 percent from the free-throw line.
