Long looked like a man with something to prove on the first night of his 10-day contract scoring nearly a point per minute and flashing a lot of energy on the glass. He was called into action with centers Jahlil Okafor and Tiago Splitter sitting out with injury. The rookie out of Louisiana-Lafayette was on the Sixers preseason roster, but was assigned to the Sixers' D-League affiliate, the Delaware 87ers, prior to the start of the season.

The 76ers have three players who have been ruled out for the season and another (Tiago Splitter) who is out indefinitely, so the NBA will grant the team a roster exemption to add Long, a 24-year-old big man who attended training camp with the team before being cut. The undrafted rookie has since honed his craft with the 76ers' D-League affiliate, the Delaware 87ers, averaging 20.2 points (on 53.5% shooting from the field), 11.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 blocks in 29.5 minutes per game in 39 appearances. He'll likely slot in as the main backup to Richaun Holmes at center for as long as Jahlil Okafor (knee) remains sidelined.

Long was never expected to make the Sixers' final roster and re-affirmed those notions after averaging just 3.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 0.8 blocks over 8.6 minutes during the preseason schedule. The Sixers still hold his D-League rights, however, so it seems likely that Long will open the season with their affiliate, the Delaware 87ers.

While the contract means Long will likely play with the Sixers' summer league team, it still doesn't guarantee him a roster spot or an invite to training camp. Long averaged 18.9 points and 12.1 rebounds in his final season at Louisiana-Lafeyette, but with a significant upgrade in talent by moving to the NBA, Long could see a difficult transition. One of the older prospects in the draft at 23 years old, Long will have to prove that he's still got the potential to develop a more well-rounded game.
