The 20-year-old isn't projected to open the season as a member of Washington's rotation, but he should have a better chance at carving out a role in a Wizards frontcourt that's lacking in quality depth behind frontcourt starters Kyle Kuzma and Daniel Gafford.

Butler was waived by the Trail Blazers on Friday, Sean Highkin of RoseGardenReport.com reports.

With the Trail Blazers essentially shutting down a majority of its regulars, Butler has seen an increased role over the past six games, averaging 5.5 points in 23.2 minutes, but the undrafted rookie out of Florida State has picked up his production over his past two appearances, posting 11.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks in 31.0 minutes during those contests.

Butler will move into the starting lineup for Thursday's game in San Antonio.

Shaedon Sharpe (knee) is out, so Butler will replace him in the first unit and will be joined by Skylar Mays, Jeenathan Williams, Trendon Watford and Drew Eubanks. Butler will have a ton of opportunity Thursday evening, but he hasn't been terribly impressive since becoming a regular part of the rotation, posting averages of 4.2 points and 2.0 rebounds over the past five games.
