Sochan has posted 5-of-17 shooting over his last two games, which isn't cause for panic considering he was an extremely raw offensive player when San Antonio drafted him. However, it serves as a reminder of the volatility associated with the Spurs' young core.

Sochan logged 14 points (7-13 FG), five rebounds, nine assists and one block over 26 minutes during Thursday's 132-121 win over the Suns.

EDGE Analysis

The nine dimes were a season high for the second-year player, who is adapting to a move to point guard and to the presence of Victor Wembanyama in the lineup. Sochan's mark of 5.2 assists per game is more than double what he managed as a rookie, but so far, the rest of his production has been flat compared to his debut.

Sochan provided zero points (0-2 FG, 0-2 3Pt), four rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal over 22 minutes during Sunday's 123-83 loss to the Clippers. He also had four turnovers.

Sochan had scored 27 points on 21 shots in San Antonio's first two games this season, but he came crashing back to earth Sunday. The core of Sochan, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Victor Wembanyama combined for just 30 points on 37.9 percent shooting, symbolic of the volatility that comes with the Spurs' young cast.

As expected, Sochan got the start at point guard, and while he struggled from the field, he posted a solid all-around stat line with decent contributions on both ends of the court. It remains to be seen how long coach Gregg Popovich will employ Sochan as a point guard, but the 20-year-old should be relevant in most formats as long as he remains a starter.

The Spurs exercised Sochan's third-year team option Monday, Jeff Garcia of KENS 5 San Antonio reports.

Sochan started at point guard once again, and coach Gregg Popovich was pleased enough to name him the starting floor general for Opening Night. Sochan averaged 9.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game in three preseason contests, and it remains to be seen how he'll handle the rigors of playing as a point forward once the regular season begins next week. However, he has the potential to become a stat-filling machine.

Coach Greg Popovich confirmed Wednesday that Sochan will start at point guard during the regular season, Andrew Lopez of ESPN reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Spurs tested the starting lineup of Sochan, Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, Victor Wembanyama and Zach Collins during the preseason and will, in fact, deploy it to start the regular season. As a plus-defender playing point forward, Sochan has the ability to provide immense value across the board in eight-category leagues, assuming that he can continue to improve at the charity stripe after finishing 2022-23 at 69.8 percent. In the 17 games Sochan saw at least 30 minutes last year, he averaged 16.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.5 steals/blocks.
