The 7-foot-3 big man possesses incredible size and should provide the Cavaliers a depth option at center that can rebound and operate as a rim protector. It remains to be seen who the Cavaliers are expected to release in the corresponding move, as they will be one over the roster limit with the addition of Tavares.

Tavares reached an agreement earlier this month to sign with the D-League's Raptors 905.

Upon getting released by the Hawks on Oct. 31, Tavares humored the idea of heading overseas, but instead opted to continue his career in the D-League with the hope of eventually making it back to the NBA. Tavares has yet to debut for the 905 since signing with the team, but the 7-foot-3 center will give the team an active shot blocker once he's cleared to play.

The Hawks made the move with the plan to sign Ryan Kelly, as it appears the strong play of Mike Muscala through the start of the regular season has left Atlanta feeling good about the center position with no need for Tavares. The big man is still young, however, at just 24 years old and boasts plenty of potential on the defensive end. He may end up in the D-League to start, but there is a chance he finds another home in the NBA before the season is over.

Tavares totaled 15 points (7-8 FG, 1-2 FT), 10 rebounds, an assist and a block over 21 minutes in Thursday's 104-83 preseason victory over the Grizzlies.

EDGE Analysis

The second-year center was outstanding while pacing the Hawks bench, serving as a dominating presence down low. At 7-foot-3, Tavares serves as a monstrous roadblock to the basket and turned in a solid Summer League performance that substantiated that potential (9.0 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.7 blocks across six games). Although the oft-injured Tiago Splitter currently slots in behind Dwight Howard on the depth chart at the five, Tavares will have a chance to give the coaching staff something to think about if he can take advantage of his preseason opportunities.

The 7-3 center concerted nearly 64 percent of his field goals, while grabbing at least seven rebounds in five of Atlanta's six games. While his massive size is intriguing, it remains somewhat unclear as to how far away Tavares is from truly contributing at the NBA level. Last season, Tavares appeared in only 11 games, spending most of the year in the D-League, where he put up 9.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.3 blocks in 21.6 minutes per game.

Tavares will rejoin the Hawks on Friday in advance of Game 3 against the Celtics, Chris Vivlamore of the Journal-Constitution reports.

EDGE Analysis

Tavares has been spending time with the Austin Spurs as they compete in the D-League postseason, but he'll return to the Hawks and is expected to be in uniform for Friday's Game 3. The big man is unlikely to play, however, as has been the case all season in what's been a developmental year for Tavares.

Tavares will remain with the Austin Toros throughout the D-League postseason, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

EDGE Analysis

Both Tavares and Lamar Patterson will remain in the D-League for as long as the Toros are alive. Austin enters the playoffs, which begin Tuesday, as the likely winner of their conference, meaning they'll face a Wild Card team in the first round. All rounds are best of three series, so Tavares and Patterson figures to remain away from the Hawks for another 7-10 days, at the minimum.
