Bertans signed a two-year contract Monday with Russian club Khimki, Eurohoops.net reports.

After Bertans' agent revealed Sunday that his client was waived by the Pelicans, the prevailing thought was that the 29-year-old would return overseas after a brief, underwhelming stint in the NBA in the second half of 2018-19. Unsurprisingly, Bertans was quickly able to find a home back in the EuroLeague, where he was one of the circuit's pre-eminent outside shooters before bolting for the NBA. The shooting guard could revisit a return to the NBA down the road, though he'll more likely than not spend the rest of his career overseas.

Bertans' agent, Arturs Kalnitis, announced Sunday via his personal Twitter account that his client was waived by the Pelicans.

EDGE Analysis

Bertans joined brother Davis in the NBA late in the 2018-19 season, appearing in 12 games for New Orleans while averaging 2.8 points and 0.8 triples in 13.9 minutes per contest while shooting 25.5 percent from the field. The Pelicans apparently weren't swayed enough by the 29-year-old's performance to justify keeping him on the roster in 2019-20 at a $1.42 million base salary, a portion of which would have been guaranteed if he wasn't waived before Aug. 1. Once he clears waivers, Bertans will evaluate his options both in the NBA and overseas before deciding where he'll continue his career.

Bertans finished with zero points (0-1 FG) and one assist in six minutes during Sunday's 128-116 loss to the Hawks.

EDGE Analysis

Bertans played sparingly in his NBA debut, as he was one of two Pelicans to earn single-digit minutes. He has a reputation as a three-point shooter, but he wasn't able to hoist any in this one. Bertans is likely to see more minutes going forward, especially on nights when Anthony Davis sits. However, fantasy owners should take a wait-and-see approach with Bertans, and thus he can be left on waiver wires at least until he starts earning decent minutes.

Bertans will be available to make his Pelicans debut Sunday against the Hawks, Pels radio voice Sean Kelley reports.

EDGE Analysis

This will be the first game for which Bertans is available after he signed with the Pelicans on the final day in February. The brother of San Antonio's Davis Bertans, Dairis was previously playing with Olimpia Milan in the EuroLeague, where he shot better than 50 percent from three.

Bertans (personal) wasn't on Saturday's injury report, Andrew Lopez of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

EDGE Analysis

It remains unclear if Bertans will take the court Sunday, however his absence from Saturday's injury report is encouraging. The Latvian guard, who signed with the Pelicans on February 28th, has yet to play in a game this season while dealing with a personal matter. A clear indication of Bertans availability should be made prior to tipoff Sunday, but even if he's given the green light, Bertans likely won't have a very large role.
