Swanigan's alma mater, Purdue, announced in a statement that the 25-year-old passed away Monday.

He proceeded to spend three seasons in the NBA, appearing in 75 games between stops in Portland and Sacramento while averaging 2.3 points and 2.9 rebounds in 8.7 minutes per contest. Swanigan hadn't appeared professionally at any level since opting out of joining the Trail Blazers at the NBA bubble in Orlando for the restart of the 2019-20 season two summers ago.

Swanigan informed the Trail Blazers on Wednesday that he won't be joining the team in Orlando when the NBA season resumes later this month, Jamie Hudson of NBC Sports Northwest reports.

Swanigan joins Trevor Ariza as Trail Blazers players who are electing not to make the trip to Florida. Even before the hiatus, Swanigan had been a fringe member of the Portland rotation, and he likely would have sacrificed all of his minutes now that big men Jusuf Nurkic (leg) and Zach Collins (shoulder) are ready to play again after lengthy absences.

Swanigan has yet to decide whether he'll join the Trail Blazers in Orlando when the NBA season resumes, Erik Gundersen of the Associated Press reports.

Swanigan's rationale is unclear, but the NBA has given players the option to sit out without penalty, so it's possible that's the path he'll take. If he does indeed sit out, it wouldn't be a major blow to the Blazers, who will get Jusuf Nurkic (leg) and Zach Collins (shoulder) back from long-term injuries.

Swanigan had two points (1-2 FG), three rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block in 12 minutes during Wednesday's 111-104 loss to the Grizzlies.

EDGE Analysis

Swanigan has earned double-digit minutes in eight straight games, but he is yet to reach double figures in scoring through 18 tilts here in 2019-20. As such, he's avoidable in most formats on nights when injuries don't force him into a starting role.

Swanigan will get the start at center for Friday's matchup with the Jazz, Casey Holdahl of the Trail Blazers' official site reports.

Swanigan will replace Hassan Whiteside (lower leg) in the starting unit. He is the only healthy center remaining on the roster, so he could be in line for a much heavier workload than usual.

Swanigan had seven points (3-6 Fg, 1-2 FT), 10 rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes during Tuesday's 127-99 loss to the Nuggets.

Swanigan made the most of garbage time, hauling in a season-high 10 rebounds. Swanigan can rack up the boards in bunches when afforded sufficient playing time. Unfortunately, his opportunities are few and far between and he is only someone to keep an eye on in the deepest formats.

Swanigan is expected to see a solid chunk of minutes Thursday against Dallas, Mike Richman of The Oregonian reports.

EDGE Analysis

Thursday will mark Swanigan's first game as a Trail Blazer, and the team is expected to give him some opportunities to show what he can do. He saw few chances with the Kings, averaging just one rebound and 0.7 points over seven contests.

Swanigan is expected to be available for the Trail Blazers' next game Thursday versus the Mavericks after his trade to Portland became official Tuesday.

EDGE Analysis

Portland and Sacramento agreed in principle Saturday on a five-player deal, but the trade wasn't announced until a few days later, after the signing restriction for Wenyen Gabriel was lifted, per Bobby Marks of ESPN.com. Swanigan, Gabriel and Trevor Ariza should all practice with the Trail Blazers on Wednesday, but the former two players may not be asked to play rotational roles for Portland and could end up being healthy inactives Thursday.

Swanigan (not injury related) won't be available Monday for Portland's game against the Warriors.

The Trail Blazers and Kings have yet to officially finalize Saturday's trade that saw five players change teams. As a result, Swanigan, Trevor Ariza and Wenyen Gabriel will have to wait until at least Thursday against the Mavericks to make their Portland debuts.
