Cubs released C Yorvit Torrealba. The 35-year-old backstop appeared in just four games with the Cubs Rookie League squad in Arizona. It's unclear if he'll attempt to latch on elsewhere, or decide to hang em' up after a 13 year major league career.

Cubs signed C Yorvit Torrealba to a minor league contract. Torrealba will report to the team's complex in Mesa, Arizona before presumably reporting to a minor league affiliate. The 35-year-old backstop will serve as organizational depth.

The veteran catcher told the media Saturday that there was "zero chance" he'd accept an assignment to the minor leagues if he didn't make the Angels out of spring training, and he's stayed true to his word. Torrealba had essentially no chance to unseat Chris Iannetta or Hank Conger on the depth chart, so this move was inevitable, barring an injury. Torrealba hit .240/.295/.285 with no homers and 16 RBI in 61 games for the Rockies last year. Another minor league deal will be out there if he wants it.

Yorvit Torrealba underwent minor surgery on his right knee. Torrealba, an impending free agent, had his medial meniscus repaired. The 35-year-old batted just .240 with zero homers and a .580 OPS over 196 plate appearances this season. He would like to return to the Rockies, but the team may just go with Jordan Pacheco as Wilin Rosario's backup.

X-rays on Yorvit Torrealba's right thumb came back negative. Torrealba had to exit Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, but he's avoided a serious malady. The catcher is day-to-day with a bruised right thumb.

Rockies activated C Yorvit Torrealba from the 7-day disabled list. He wound up need just one extra day on the concussion DL. Torrealba will return to being Wilin Rosario's primary backup.

Yorvit Torrealba will not return from the 7-day concussion disabled list when first eligible. "I'm not sure he is quite ready to be activated (Monday)," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "But I don't think it will be too much longer." Torrealba has been out with concussion-like symptoms since August 19. There has been a rash of catcher concussions this season.

Rockies placed C Yorvit Torrealba on the 7-day disabled list. Torrealba left Sunday's game after he was hit in the mask by a foul tip. As is the case with all concussions, it's up in the air as to how much time he might miss.
