With the Athletics providing no indication that Alonso is nursing an injury, it looks like he may just be receiving a day off to rest after starting nine consecutive contests. Ryon Healy will cover first base in the slugger's absence while Stephen Vogt sticks in the lineup as the designated hitter.

The once hyped prospect was enduring a disappointing career before changing his swing and launch angle before this season. Alonso already has set a career best with 17 home runs and a .306/.398/.645 line in 211 plate appearances. Perhaps the best part of this year: He's hit 11 of his big flies at his pitcher-friendly home. Oakland does have some sneaky offensive firepower as a whole, especially with other long-term pieces like Ryon Healy and Khris Davis, so it wouldn't be the worst thing for Alonso to stick in this lineup for the near future. Still, considering Oakland is almost consistently rebuilding, this plan may never develop if they find an aggressive buyer later this summer.

Alonso went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run in Tuesday's 8-1 loss to the Marlins.

Alonso was the only Oakland player on base more than once in what was his Miami homecoming, and he crossed the plate with the team's only run of the night as well. After an excellent first two months of the season, the 30-year-old has kicked it up a notch further thus far in June, posting five multi-hit outings and hitting .375 over his first 45 plate appearances of the month.

Alonso went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI during Saturday's loss to Tampa Bay in the first game of their doubleheader.

Alonso was the bright spot on the day for an Oakland team that was pounded by the Indians. The 30-year-old has hit safely in four straight and has enjoyed an impressive May despite some injury issues, slashing .302/.421/.825 with 10 home runs, 17 RBI 12 walks and 14 runs during the month.

Updating a previous report, Alonso (wrist) will return to the Athletics lineup Sunday. He'll play first base and bat fifth.

EDGE Analysis

The initial lineup the Athletics released listed Alonso as a bench player for the fourth straight contest, but it appears that the soreness in the 29-year-old's bruised wrist has subsided enough for him to return to the field. If Alonso is able to make it out of Sunday's contest no worse for the wear, it should give fantasy owners confidence to keep him active for the upcoming week. However, given the nature of Alonso's injury, it wouldn't be surprising if he struggles to immediately display the power that has made him a breakout player in the first two months of the season.
