Diaz allowed two earned runs on five walks over one inning of relief Sunday in his appearance for Triple-A Reno.

Diaz made his second appearance for Reno since rejoining the squad following a stay at the Diamondbacks' facility in Arizona to work on command issues. Judging by Sunday's effort, the right-hander's wayward command was not solved. The 24-year-old had previously started in each of his first eight appearances of the season with Reno, but both of his last two outings have come out of the bullpen. Arizona might not have completely closed the door on developing Diaz as a starter, but he looks like he'll first need to find some success in a relief role before he's considered for a spot in the Reno rotation.

The Diamondbacks assigned Diaz to Triple-A Reno from the Arizona Complex League on Tuesday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Diaz was transferred from Reno to the Arizona Complex League back on May 26 as the Diamondbacks hoped to get Diaz back on track. Prior to that transaction, the right-hander had been issuing an abundance of walks. In an ACL appearance June 7, the 24-year-old allowed two earned runs across two innings, but he struck out five and walked none.

Diaz was transferred from Triple-A Reno to Arizona's training complex Saturday, Michael McDermott of SI.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Diamondbacks want Diaz to get right after walking at least five batters in four consecutive starts. In his most recent start against Sugar Land on May 17, Diaz retired the first batter faced and then walked five straight before being pulled. He showed improved strike-throwing ability in 2024 but has taken a huge step backwards this season. In nine combined appearances between Reno (eight starts) and Arizona (one in relief), Diaz has struck out 34 and walked 34 over 33 innings.

Diaz was called up from Triple-A on Friday and made his 2025 debut against Atlanta, but he was roughed up for three runs on four hits and three walks over three innings while striking out one batter. Arizona selected Scott McGough's contract from Reno in a corresponding move.

The right-hander is one of Arizona's top prospects and will receive a look in the majors after beginning the campaign at the Triple-A level. Diaz has a 5.82 ERA and 19:15 K:BB across five starts with Reno this year but is likely to work out of the bullpen while up with the Diamondbacks.

Diaz (finger) was reinstated from Triple-A Reno's 7-day injured list Thursday and struck out six while allowing three runs on four hits and two walks over five innings in his return to the club's rotation.

Diaz was placed on Reno's IL on Aug. 7 with a blister on his right hand but missed just over a week of action before making his return. The 24-year-old righty acquitted himself well in four starts with the big club earlier this season, but he could struggle to get another look with the Diamondbacks in 2024 if all of Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Brandon Pfaadt, Eduardo Rodriguez, Jordan Montgomery and Ryne Nelson are all able to stay healthy down the stretch.

The young right-hander held a solid 4.05 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 14:8 K:BB in 20 innings covering three starts for Arizona last month, but with Eduardo Rodriguez back and Merrill Kelly's (shoulder) return imminent, Diaz probably wasn't going to be back in the majors anytime soon even if he was healthy.
