Scruggs signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract Tuesday with the NC Dinos of the Korean Baseball Organization, Dan Kurtz of MyKBO.net reports.

The 30-year-old Scruggs, who last appeared in affiliated ball in 2016 as a member of the Marlins organization, will remain in the KBO for a second straight season after clubbing 35 home runs and 24 doubles for the Dinos in 2017. The first baseman had a strong track record of production for much of his time in the minors, but his poor numbers during cups of coffee with the Cardinals and Marlins from 2014 through 2016 would have likely relegated him to signing a minor-league deal had he headed back stateside. He'll see if another banner campaign in the KBO will be enough to generate more serious MLB interest next winter.

Scruggs was outrighted from the Marlins' 40-man roster and elected free agency, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.

EDGE Analysis

The 29-year-old mashed during his tenure with Triple-A New Orleans, but his bat simply didn't translate to the big leagues. Scruggs will look to land with an organization in need of depth at first base, as it's unlikely he'll get a major role with any team until he proves he can consistently hit major league pitching.

Scruggs went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI on Monday against the Mets.

EDGE Analysis

The 28-year-old has been hitting very well since joining the Marlins August 19. In 26 at-bats, Scruggs has nine hits-three for extra bases-to go along with four RBI. The first baseman has started all but one game since his promotion, and should continue to see steady at-bats for as long as he's hitting.

Scruggs went 2-for-2 with a walk and one RBI in Sunday's setback against the Padres.

EDGE Analysis

Scruggs accounted for the Marlins' lone run against Clayton Richard and the Padres' bullpen while reaching base in each of his three trips to the plate. Scruggs has taken over the strong side of the platoon at fist base while Justin Bour (ankle) remains out. Scruggs has seven hits in his first 23 at-bats this season after compiling a strong .290/.408/.565 line over 317 at-bats with Triple-A New Orleans this season.

Scruggs is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Padres, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

He will be replaced at first base by Chris Johnson with lefty Clayton Richard due up for San Diego. Outside of a home run in his second game with the Marlins, Scruggs hasn't done a whole lot of note yet, and his window to play regularly will likely close if Justin Bour (ankle) ever makes it back.

Scruggs went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in Saturday's 3-1 victory over the Pirates.

EDGE Analysis

His fourth-inning homer was the difference in the ball game and gave him a hit in each of his first two games with the Marlins. Scruggs had been tearing the cover off the ball in Triple-A New Orleans prior to his Friday call-up, making him an interesting late-season prospect to keep an eye on for fantasy purposes.

Scruggs has been on fire during his last 10 games with New Orleans, posting a .408 batting average and hitting five home runs. For the season, he now owns a .290/.408/.565 line with 21 home runs over 93 games. He'll start at first base and bat sixth in Friday's contest against the Pirates. In a corresponding move, Chris Narveson was designated for assignment.

Scruggs was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Saturday. With only two games remaining before the All-Star break, this will give Scruggs an opportunity to get consistent at-bats over the next week. It would not be surprising for him to be recalled in 10 days to continue offering depth at first base.

Scruggs is in the starting lineup Friday batting seventh and playing first base against right-hander Andrew Cashner. As a right-handed bat, Scruggs doesn't fit into a typical platoon role with Mark Reynolds, but he's chipped in effectively when called upon by the Cards in limited chances this season (10-for-25, .400) after posting an .851 OPS at Triple-A Memphis through 60 games.

Scruggs is out of the lineup Wednesday against Chicago. Scruggs has made three straight starts at first base, but the Cardinals will deploy Mark Reynolds on Wednesday against Jose Quintana. Reynolds has had some success against Quintana, going 3-for-12 in his career with two doubles and a home run.
