Royals optioned LHPs Will Smith and Everett Teaford, RHP Nate Adcock to Triple-A Omaha. They also reassigned Yordano Ventura, Blaine Boyer, Michael Mariot and Brian Sances to minor league camp. With Smith optioned, the competition for the final spot in the Royals' rotation is now down to Bruce Chen and Luis Mendoza.

Will Smith continued to make his charge at securing the fifth spot in the Royals Opening Day rotation, allowing one run on five hits over four innings of work against the Padres on Friday. Smith racked up two strikeouts without walking a batter in the game. The 23-year old lefty is coming off a disappointing rookie campaign, but owns a 1.64 ERA and 10/1 K/BB ratio over 11 innings this spring. The final spot in the rotation appears to be a three-way battle between Smith, Luis Mendoza and Bruce Chen.

Will Smith cruised through his first spring training start on Friday, setting down all six Rangers that he faced in order. Smith recorded one strikeout in the start, while throwing 16 of his 22 pitches for strikes. The 23-year-old southpaw posted a disappointing 5.32 ERA and 1.61 WHIP during his rookie season in 2012, and will have to beat out Bruce Chen and a slew of others to earn the final spot in the Royals rotation.
