Will Smith struck out four of the five batters he faced Wednesday against the Orioles, lowering his ERA to 0.36.
Smith has allowed three runs -- one earned -- and struck out 36 in 25 1/3 innings. The strikeout total isn't a big surprise -- he fanned 43 in 33 1/3 innings last season -- but it is unexpected that he's gone this long without allowing a homer. He gave up six last year, and he's gone from playing half of his games in a bad park for homers in K.C. to a very good one in Milwaukee.

Will Smith recorded a one-out save, his first of the year, against the Pirates on Sunday.
With one runner on and two outs, Smith was called on to face Pedro Alvarez with two outs. He needed just three pitches to fan the lefty. Through 6 1/3 innings this year, the southpaw has struck out nine while not allowing a run. He won't get many save opportunities, but Smith has emerged as a strong bullpen option for the Brewers this year.

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Will Smith looked "incredible" during his last bullpen session.
There's no room for Smith the rotation following the Matt Garza signing, but that could be a good thing. The left-hander might have found a home in the bullpen last year with a 2.45 ERA and 38/6 K/BB ratio across 29 1/3 relief frames for the Royals. Smith could be used to help set up for Jim Henderson.

Milwaukee's signing of Matt Garza enables the club to use left-hander Will Smith out of the bullpen, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.
Smith held opponents to a .558 OPS as a reliever in Kansas City last season. The Royals swapped him to the Brewers in December for Norichika Aoki. While Milwaukee at the time toyed with the idea of converting Smith back into a starting role, they now have no pressure to do so. Smith, 24, had a 3.24 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 43/7 K/BB ratio in 33 1/3 innings last season. Rosenthal adds that the Brewers might add one more reliever, but might prefer that Rule 5 pick LHP Wei Chung-Wang win the last bullpen spot.

Brewers acquired LHP Will Smith from the Royals for OF Norichika Aoki.
Smith was converted to the bullpen this past year in Kansas City and flourished in that role, but the Brewers seem likely to use him as a starter because Aoki was a highly-valuable trade chip -- not the type of guy you'd deal for a reliever. Smith, 24, had a 3.24 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 43/7 K/BB ratio in 33 1/3 innings (mostly relief) this summer for the Royals. Milwaukee has badly needed talented young pitching.
