Benson provided the Reds with some insurance, sending a solo blast to center to make it an 8-2 ballgame in the sixth. The 25-year-old continues to improve at the plate. In his first stint with the Reds this year, he hit .040 with a .117 OPS and a 1:14 BB:K in 10 games. Since returning to the majors May 26, Benson is slashing .373/.492/.588 with two homers, five RBI, 12 runs, four steals and an eye-popping 12:7 BB:K in 63 plate appearances. He's been a massive part of the Reds' recent surge but has essentially been restricted to hitting against righties only, as he has just five plate appearances against lefties all year.

Though he's slashing a magnificent .341/.481/.488 with three extra-base hits and four stolen bases through his first 14 games of June, the lefty-hitting Benson will head to the bench for the series opener while southpaw Austin Gomber takes the bump for Colorado. Despite his recent success, Benson could soon see his opportunities to play versus right-handers take a hit too, given that the Reds have nearly all of their key position players healthy again with Joey Votto (shoulder/biceps) returning from the 60-day injured list Monday.

EDGE Analysis
Benson notched his third three-hit effort and second multi-walk game of the season. He's slashing .264/.354/.375 with one home run and four RBI across 27 games, and the athletic prospect continues to see regular playing time with Wil Myers (shoulder) and Jake Fraley (wrist) on the injured list and Stuart Fairchild battling neck stiffness. However, Fraley and Myers could be returning soon, so despite his prolific outing Saturday, Benson may be headed back to Triple-A as a result.

Benson was initially set to sit Friday, but he will enter the lineup and replace Stuart Fairchild (neck) in the outfield. Benson has produced at least one hit in seven out of his last 10 games, batting .333 with a homer, a double, two RBI and three runs scored over that stretch.

Benson has been productive with more playing time in June, going 9-for-28 (.321) over nine contests this month. All three of his hits were singles Sunday, and he wasn't able to provide a run-scoring play -- he has just two RBI and two runs scored in June. The outfielder is at a .230/.288/.311 slash line with a home run, three steals, two RBI and six runs scored over 66 plate appearances. He should continue to see at least a strong-side platoon role in the outfield while Wil Myers (shoulder), Jake Fraley (wrist) and Nick Senzel (knee) are all sidelined.

Benson came to the plate in the ninth inning with no homers over 105 big-league at-bats, but he got on the board in a big way with a two-run, walk-off shot. The outfielder has displayed good power in the minors, but he's had trouble making contact as a big-leaguer, striking out in nearly one-third of his plate appearances. A glut of injuries in Cincinnati's outfield has provided Benson with an expanded opportunity to play lately, and he's gone 8-for-24 (.333 average) with three steals over his past eight contests.
