Castillo signed with Miami earlier this month after the team placed backstops Jorge Alfaro (COVID-19) and Chad Wallach (undisclosed) on the injured list, but both have since resumed working out at the organization's alternate training site in Jupiter. With both players nearing returns and Francisco Cervelli and Ryan Lavarnway still ahead of him in the pecking order at catcher, Castillo was deemed expendable.

Castillo signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins and was added to the organization's 60-man roster pool Aug. 3.

The 36-year-old will bolster Miami's depth at catcher, but he'll remain at the organization's alternate training site for the duration of 2020 unless the Marlins require another backstop at some point. The Marlins are already without two of their top three catchers in Jorge Alfaro (COVID-19) and Chad Wallach (undisclosed).

Castillo was designated for assignment by the Marlins on Tuesday.

Castillo will head to the waivers after being kicked off the 40-man roster. The backstop has put together a .250/.310/.408 slash line with six homers and 24 RBI over 58 games this season at Triple-A New Orleans.

With Jorge Alfaro returning from a concussion, Castillo will head back down for the time being. Castillo only recorded one hit in seven at-bats with Miami, but regardless his is one of the best feel-good stories of the year in baseball; it took him a decade, but Castillo managed to claw his way back to the big leagues.

Castillo signed a minor league contract with the Pirates on Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training, John Morosi of Fox Sports reports. Castillo spent 2014 playing in Mexico for two different teams, batting a combined .206/.265/.317 with two home runs and 11 RBI. He seems like a longshot to make the roster out of spring training, but the Pirates don't have any studs behind the plate with Russell Martin gone, leaving open the possibility of him nabbing a roster spot with a strong spring training.
