Machin was recalled from the alternate training site Friday, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

The 27-year-old failed to make the Opening Day roster but will join the team a couple weeks into the season. Stephen Piscotty was placed on the paternity list in a corresponding move, so it could be a short stint in the majors for Machin.

Machin made a strong push for an Opening Day roster spot early in spring training, but he won't break camp with the team after he hit .271 with eight RBI and seven runs in 22 Cactus League games. The 27-year-old appeared in 24 major-league contests last year and hit .206 with two doubles and 11 runs.

Machin, who went 2-for-2 with a run in a Cactus League win over the Indians on Sunday, is now hitting .417 (5-for-12) with two RBI and two runs across his first six spring games.

After a five-year minor-league career that included several impressive stints at the plate, Machin made his big-league debut in 2020 with the Athletics and limped to a .206/.296/.238 line across 71 plate appearances. However, much like during a 2020 Cactus League tenure during which he made an impression with a .308 average (4-for-13), three RBI, six walks and two runs, Machin is finding a way to consistently get on base early this spring. The 27-year-old's prowess at the plate thus far is a welcome complement to the defensive versatility he displayed while filling in at all four infield spots last season, getting his quest for a utility spot on the Opening Day roster off to a good start.

Machin will not be a part of the A's roster for the ALDS against the Astros, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Machin didn't make an appearance during the AL Wild Card Round, so it's not hard to see why he wouldn't be considered an important part of the team for Oakland's next series. Reliever Jordan Weems was added in his place.

Machin is out of the lineup for the first game of Monday's doubleheader with the Mariners.

Machin had started in 12 of the Athletics' previous 15 games while Marcus Semien and Matt Chapman missed time due to injuries, but the rookie's run of regular playing time looks to be over. Though Chapman has been ruled out for the season after undergoing hip surgery, the Athletics don't appear to be view Machin as a viable everyday option at the hot corner. Instead, look for Oakland to give the newly signed Jake Lamb a trial as the main lefty-hitting option at the position, while the right-handed Nate Orf fills the short side of a platoon. Now on the bench for the second game in a row, the lefty-hitting Machin is somewhat redundant after the addition of Lamb.

Machin is not in Sunday's lineup against the Rangers.

The Rule 5 draftee is hitting .250 with more walks (six) than strikeouts (four) in 32 at-bats this month, and he's coming off a busy Saturday twin bill in which he went a combined 1-for-5 with a double, two base on balls and three runs. While he is sitting in this one, his playing time is trending up with Matt Chapman (hip) and Chad Pinder (hamstring) both potentially done for the season.

Machin drew the start at third base in place of Matt Chapman (hip) in Wednesday's win over the Astros and went 0-for-2 with two walks while scoring the game-tying run.

The versatile Machin had been identified as one of the possible fill-ins for Chapman during his absence, and manager Bob Melvin slotted him in there for Wednesday's contest. Machin has become increasingly productive with his starting opportunities recently -- he's now reached safely in eight straight games dating back to Aug. 26 and is hitting a solid .292 (7-for-24) over that span -- and it's telling Melvin is apparently endeavoring to keep his bat in the lineup after Machin's stint as the primary starting shortstop while Marcus Semien was out with a side injury came to a close.

Machin went 3-for-3 with a run scored and a double in a 5-4 loss to the Astros in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader.

Machin hit a leadoff single in the third inning and score on a Tony Kemp sacrifice fly. The double was Machin's first extra-base hit in 15 games this season. He's slashing .237/.310/.263 across 42 plate appearances. He's scored five runs, but he has yet to record an RBI.

Machin, who drew a second consecutive start at shortstop Monday, is also a candidate to see time at third base while Matt Chapman (hip) remains sidelined, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
