Operating out of the leadoff spot, Machin got the first run of the game on the board with his ground-rule two-bagger in the first inning that plated Skye Bolt. Machin has hit safely in each of the Athletics' first three games of the second half, but Friday's double was his first extra-base hit since a solo home run July 10 against the Astros.

Machin went 2-for-5 with a run in a loss to the Rangers on Monday.

The 28-year-old filled the leadoff spot and handled the hot corner Monday, posting his second straight two-hit game in the process. Machin got off to a forgettable 2-for-14 start over his first seven games after his promotion from Triple-A Las Vegas. However, his last pair of performances offer some hope he can begin producing in a manner that at least approximates the strong body of work he put together with the Aviators over the first two-plus months of the minor-league season.

Machin recorded his first homer and first multi-hit game of the year, accounting for the Athletics' only run Sunday. He's hitting .222 with a 1:5 BB:K in eight games since he was brought up from Triple-A Las Vegas at the end of June. This was also his second career multi-hit game -- his only other one also came against the Astros in September of 2020. The 28-year-old has settled into a strong-side platoon role at third base, with Sheldon Neuse picking up most of the starts versus southpaws at the hot corner.

Machin isn't starting Saturday against the Astros.

Machin started in the last two games and went 1-for-7 with two strikeouts but will take a seat with left-hander Framber Valdez on the mound Saturday. Sheldon Neuse will take over at the hot corner and bat eighth.

Machin will start at third base and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

He'll stick in the lineup for the third time in five games, with all of his starts coming against right-handed pitching over that stretch. Meanwhile, Sheldon Neuse has made the other two starts at third base when Oakland has faced left-handed pitchers, so the lefty-hitting Machin looks as though he'll fill the large side of a platoon at the hot corner while Jonah Bride (shoulder) remains on the injured list. Machin has thus far gone 1-for-7 with a walk since receiving a call-up from Triple-A Las Vegas last Thursday.

EDGE Analysis

The 28-year-old infielder is hitting .324/.401/.457 with four home runs and more walks (33) than strikeouts (30) in 64 games with Las Vegas. On an A's team that is tied for last in the majors with a 76 wRC+, there should be at-bats available for Machin, especially given his defensive versatility. He has seen the most time at third base, shortstop and second base this year at Triple-A.

Oakland initially optioned Machin to Las Vegas on March 23, only to remove him from the 40-man roster entirely just over a week later. With the 28-year-old going unclaimed off waivers, he'll remain in the organization at the Triple-A level as organizational infield depth. Machin struggled mightily in a limited sample of big-league action across the past two seasons, slashing .179/.264/.200 across 108 plate appearances.

Machin was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Machin had several stints with the major-league club in 2021, but it appears as though he'll begin the 2022 campaign in the minors. He appeared in 89 games in Las Vegas last year and slashed .295/.389/.479 with 11 homers, 66 runs, 58 RBI and two stolen bases.

Machin landed on the 10-day injured list with a stomach illness Friday.

EDGE Analysis

The illness is reportedly not coronavirus-related, but it will nonetheless end Machin's season, as he'll hit the 10-day injured list with just three days left on the schedule. He'll end the season having appeared in 15 major-league games, hitting .125/.200/.125 in that limited action. Pete Kozma was called up to take his place on the roster.
