Rather than having Webb report to Triple-A St. Paul after he was informed he wouldn't be included on the Twins' Opening Day roster, the organization elected to cut ties with the 32-year-old lefty entirely. Webb has seen action in the majors in parts of five seasons, though none of his 139 career appearances have come since 2021.

Webb had struggled for most of the season, and he'll be cast off the 40-man roster after he allowed eight runs (six earned) on five hits and four walks in 1.1 innings across his last two appearances. The southpaw posted a 13.22 ERA and 2.51 WHIP in 16.1 innings across 22 relief appearances to begin the year. Left-hander Andrew Miller (toe) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move.

Webb secured his second hold in a win over the Diamondbacks on Saturday, firing a scoreless eighth inning during which he allowed a hit and recorded a strikeout.

Despite his season-long struggles, Webb was notably called up on by manager Mike Shildt to work the eighth inning in a three-run game. The veteran left-hander was up to the task, firing 13 of his 17 pitches into the strike zone during a relatively smooth frame. It was a rare taste of success for Webb, who'd allowed at least one earned run in seven of his previous nine trips to the mound despite not surrendering any home runs during that stretch.

Webb, who allowed an earned run on two walks over 1.1 innings in a loss to the Padres on Friday, owns a 19.29 ERA over four May appearances.

The left-hander also recorded two strikeouts Friday for his first outing with multiple punchouts this season, but Webb simply can't seem to settle into any sort of groove for an extended period. The veteran offered some hope when he posted four consecutive scoreless appearances over a seven-day period in mid-April, but he's subsequently generated a 16.62 ERA and 3.23 WHIP in the 4.1 innings covering his next six appearances. Webb is still seeing as much work as in past seasons -- his 15 appearances are already just six fewer than the 21 he logged in 2020 -- but manager Mike Shildt could reach his breaking point eventually if the 30-year-old doesn't figure things out soon.

The left-hander's woes continued in Thursday's loss to the Mets, when he failed to record a single out and got just three of 11 pitches into the strike zone before getting the hook in the seventh inning. Prior to the current stretch, the normally reliable Webb had produced four consecutive scoreless efforts. However, his multi-appearance slump has ballooned his ERA and WHIP to 13.00 and 2.22, respectively.

Webb, who fired a scoreless two-thirds of an inning in which he recorded a strikeout during Sunday's loss to the Brewers, has a 12.46 ERA and 1.38 WHIP across his first six appearances.

EDGE Analysis

The left-hander is already logging his usual heavy volume of middle-relief work, but Webb has given up multiple earned runs twice, leading to his inflated numbers. The 30-year-old has posted ERAs of 3.76 and 2.08 over his last two seasons, however, so there's evidence to support the notion he can bounce back over time.

Webb owns a 3.86 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 5:1 K:BB and three holds across the 4.2 innings covering his first five Grapefruit League appearances.

The veteran southpaw has also held hitters to a cumulative .176 average while posting three scoreless one-inning outings in his five trips to the mound. Webb is coming off a career-best 2020 campaign during which he recorded a 2.08 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, one save and two holds across 21.2 innings (21 appearances).
