Lombardozzi was outrighted to Triple-A New Orleans on Thursday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Lombardozzi will head to New Orleans after being ousted from the Marlins' 40-man roster earlier in the week. He should continue to serve as organizational infield depth.

Lombardozzi was designated for assignment by the Marlins on Tuesday, Andre Fernandez of the Miami Herald reports.

EDGE Analysis

Lombardozzi was ousted from the roster to clear room for Christian Colon, who was claimed off waivers from the Royals. The 28-year-old saw a brief stint with the big club this season due to a myriad of injuries to the Marlins' infield, though he failed to take advantage of his opportunity, going hitless in eight at-bats. While Lombardozzi has a decent amount of major-league experience to his name, he hasn't collected a hit in the big leagues since 2014, so he likely won't be viewed as anything more than organizational depth wherever he winds up.

Lombardozzi was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on Sunday.

EDGE Analysis

Lombardozzi was promoted to the majors last week after a glut of injuries popped up within the Marlins' infield, leaving the team severely shorthanded. The 28-year-old went hitless in his eight at-bats and will now return to Triple-A New Orleans where he'll continue to be relied upon as organizational infield depth.

The Marlins purchased Lombardozzi's contract from Triple-A New Orleans on Wednesday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Adeiny Hechavarria (oblique) was the latest Marlins infielder to hit the disabled list Wednesday after Martin Prado (hamstring) and Miguel Rojas (thumb) preceded him earlier this week, so Lombardozzi was brought in to add some insurance around the diamond. It's not expected that Lombardozzi, who last appeared in the big leagues in 2015 with the Pirates, will see meaningful at-bats, but he should act as the top backup at multiple spots until the Marlins are able to get either Hechavarria or Prado back from injury.

Lombardozzi was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday.

Lombardozzi was used sparingly by the Pirates in his latest big league stint and didn't do much to establish himself as even a decent bench bat. He appeared in six games for a single plate appearance and never reached base, so the Pirates opted to instead get some bullpen help.

Lombardozzi was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune reports.

Lombardozzi joins Gorkys Hernandez in coming up in advance of Sunday's game, and he brings with him a .316/.375/.368 slash line at Triple-A. In six games for the Pirates this season, Lombardozzi is 0-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts.

Lombardozzi was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday.

Lombardozzi had been used sparingly in the week and a half since his callup (four at-bats), and was an obvious candidate to head down with the Pirates needing bullpen help after using seven relievers Friday. Right-hander Wilfredo Boscan was brought up in a corresponding move.

Lombardozzi grounded out to the pitcher in his pinch-hitting debut with the Bucs on Wednesday.

The Pirates will use Lombardozzi's versatility around the diamond and call upon him as a frequent pinch-hitter. Only a series of injuries would boost the utilityman's playing time. He holds a career line of .266/.297/.340 in 779 major-league at-bats.

Lombardozzi was called up to the major leagues Wednesday, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Lombardozzi has gotten off to a great start to the season with Triple-A Indianapolis, slashing .379/.460/.483 with 13 RBI in 24 games. With Andrew Lambo heading to the DL with a foot injury, Lombardozzi will fill the vacant roster spot and serve as a utility infield option.

Lombardozzi was traded to the Pirates on Tuesday for cash considerations, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reports.

Manny Machado's absence afforded Lombardozzi a chance at semi-regular playing time to start the season, and he hit .292 in 72 at-bats in April, but then saw just a mere one at-bat after the calendar turned to May. His numbers in a larger sample at Triple-A Norfolk left a lot to be desired (.270/.307/.311) and the 26-year-old will likely serve as little more than a last-ditch utility option with his new club.
