Mayers allowed a whopping nine runs on eight hits and two walks across just 1.1 innings in his big league debut Sunday against the Dodgers. He did manage to strike out one batter.
EDGE Analysis
The rookie couldn't have gotten off to a worse start, as he allowed the first three men he faced to reach base before Adrian Gonzalez stepped up and smacked a grand slam to center. Mayers eventually got out of the first after allowing six runs, and he came back out for the second, although he allowed the Dodgers to string a rally together and was chased after three more men crossed the plate. The club was expected to send Mayers down after Sunday's spot start all along, and his ERA of 60.75 should remove any doubt from the decision.

Maness (elbow) was activated from the 15-day DL on Sunday, MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Maness posted a 4.16 FIP over 12.2 innings before landing on the disabled list, but the concerning aspect was his 4.26 K/9 -- a career-low regardless of level. Now presumably healthy, the right-hander will return to middle relief in St. Louis, though he doesn't offer meaningful fantasy value in traditional formats.

Maness (elbow) will begin his rehab assignment Wednesday at Double-A Springfield.
EDGE Analysis
Maness landed on the disabled list in mid-May after it became clear that his elbow soreness was related to his significant drop in fastball velocity. He resumed his throwing program on May 25 and now the 27-year-old reliever is ready to start out on a rehab assignment. It's unclear how many appearances the Cardinals want him to make before activating him, but once he's ready, he'll add some much-needed depth to a bullpen that has underwhelmed over the first two months of the season.

Maness (elbow) will resume throwing Saturday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
This is the first sign of progress for Maness, as he had been completely shut down since being placed on the disabled list on May 14. A timetable for his return hasn't been revealed, although that should become clearer as he strengthens his arm through bullpen sessions and live batting practice sessions through his rehab program.

Updating on a previous report, Maness was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with elbow irritation, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
EDGE Analysis
It was reported Friday that Maness had been optioned to Triple-A Memphis, but the fact that the Cardinals did not make a corresponding move suggested that there could have been something else in the works. According to Goold, Maness said his arm felt fine Friday, but the fact of the matter is that the right-hander has had a significant dropoff in fastball velocity this season. His DL stint could be backdated to his last appearance, May 12, so Maness could return in late May if his elbow issue clears up.

Maness was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Friday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
EDGE Analysis
Maness had been extremely uneven through the first part of the season and his meltdown Thursday in which he allowed three runs in .1 innings of work was apparently the last straw for the struggling reliever. He'll head back down to Triple-A Memphis for the time being, where he figures to see plenty of innings according to Goold. Maness's velocity has dropped to a concerning 87.3 MPH after sitting closer to 90 in his first few years in the majors. The Cardinals have yet to announce a corresponding move.

Maness has allowed four runs over 4.1 innings this season, while giving up eight hits with a 3:2 K:BB.
EDGE Analysis
His rough start is a bad sign for a pitcher whose 4.26 ERA last year was over a point higher than his 2.91 ERA in 2014. The early season downturn may seem like a slump, but if it continues as the season drags on, it may be a sign that Maness' career could be headed in the wrong direction.

Manness is expected to once again be apart of the Cardinals bullpen in 2016, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
EDGE Analysis
Maness will likely be a sixth or seventh inning guy for the Cardinals this year as there's three to four relievers ahead of him.

Maness agreed to a one-year contract with the Cardinals on Friday, avoiding arbitration.
EDGE Analysis
His peripherals remained mostly intact from 2014, but the results for Maness last season were a far cry from those from the previous two years. He posted a 4.26 ERA, up from 2.91, as right-handed hitters did more damage against the 27-year-old. Maness racked up 20 holds but may see a slight reduction in high-leverage work with Seung-Hwan Oh now on the roster.

Maness coughed up three runs on three hits, walking one and striking out one over one-plus innings in an 8-3 loss to the Cubs on Friday afternoon.
EDGE Analysis
He allowed a two-run home run to Starlin Castro in the fifth inning, and departed after facing one batter in the sixth, as the Cubs would add three more runs to break the game open. It was a rough day for the Cardinals' mound corps which issued 11 walks and 10 hits to the surging Cubs.
