Twins reassigned RHPs Samuel Deduno and P.J. Walters to minor league camp. Deduno was a candidate to fill in for Scott Diamond (elbow) in the starting rotation, but a recent groin issue changed all that. The final spot in the rotation figures to come down to either Cole De Vries or Liam Hendriks.

Samuel Deduno will miss his scheduled start Sunday due to a minor groin injury. The injury occurred during the championship game of the World Baseball Classic. Manager Ron Gardenhire said that Deduno's status is "day to day." P.J. Walters will start in his place Sunday.

Samuel Deduno was brilliant in the finale of the World Baseball Classic on Tuesday, scattering two hits and three walks over five shutout innings as the Dominican Republic topped Puerto Rico 3-0 to claim the title. Octavio Dotel, Pedro Strop, Santiago Casilla and Fernando Rodney each worked a scoreless inning to complete the shutout. The bullpen for the Dominican Republic didn't allow a run in the final 25 2/3 innings of the tournament, and Team Dominica finished the 2013 WBC a perfect 8-0. Edwin Encarnacion provided the biggest blow in the final on Tuesday with a two-run double in the first inning. That came after Robinson Cano had been intentionally walked with a man at third and one out. The next World Baseball Classic is in 2017.

Samuel Deduno struck out seven while tossing four innings of one-run ball in Thursday's 3-1 win over the United States. Deduno was shaky in the first, allowing three hits and walking in a run. He really settled in after that, though, and showed plenty of emotion on the mound. The game was tied heading into the ninth inning, when the Dominicans touched up closer Craig Zimbrel for a pair of runs. The Dominican Republic has advanced to the WBC's final round, while the USA will square off against Puerto Rico Friday in a do-or-die game.
