Caleb Ferguson will be the Dodgers' opener. It's possible the team will use a right-hander in between Ferguson and Yarbrough in order to break up the lefties, but Yarbrough looks to be in line to eat up the bulk of the innings.

The Dodgers could deploy Yarbrough as a piggyback pitcher behind starter Emmet Sheehan in Thursday's game against the Giants, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

While manager Dave Roberts hasn't revealed how he plans to manage his pitching staff in the series opener, piggybacking the right-handed Sheehan with the left-handed Yarbrough would make sense. Additionally, having Yarbrough enter the contest midway through the contest would help the Dodgers neutralize a Giants lineup that often contains four lefty bats in Michael Conforto, Joc Pederson, Mike Yastrzemski and LaMonte Wade. Yarbrough last pitched Sunday, but he should be capable of giving the Dodgers three or four innings on three days' rest, if necessary.

Yarbrough (8-6) earned the win Sunday over the Mariners, allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over 4.2 innings.

He's found success as a bulk reliever and will likely continue in that role. Yarbrough is at a 3.58 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 45:10 K:BB through 70.1 innings overall when accounting for his time with the Royals. If Ryan Pepiot sticks in the rotation beyond Wednesday, Yarbrough may often serve as a piggyback for the young right-hander.

For the year, he's at a 3.82 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 38:9 K:BB through 61.1 innings between the Dodgers and the Royals.

Yarbrough's no stranger to working behind an opener in his career, and the Dodgers appear to want to continue that, at least for now. It worked in his team debut, though the bullpen couldn't maintain the lead after an eighth-inning meltdown. Yarbrough has started seven of his 15 appearances this season, posting a 4.07 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 32:9 K:BB through 55.1 innings while earning a 4-5 record. With Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) expected back next week, Yarbrough may have to settle for a more traditional multi-inning relief role unless the Dodgers want to go with something resembling a six-man rotation.

The Dodgers acquired Yarbrough from the Royals on Tuesday in exchange for minor-league infielders Devin Mann and Derlin Figueroa, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

Yarbrough, 31, has a 4.24 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 29 strikeouts in 51 innings this season while working as both a starter and a bulk reliever. He will likely occupy a long-relief role while making the occasional spot start for the Dodgers, who have been relying on youngsters Bobby Miller, Emmet Sheehan and Michael Grove to round out the back end of the rotation but may be keen on managing their innings down the stretch.

Yarbrough (4-5) earned the win over the Twins on Sunday after allowing one run on seven hits while striking out five over seven innings.

Yarbrough's five strikeouts tied his season high, and the seven innings was the longest he's gone this year. He generated 12 whiffs and a 32 percent CSW (called strikes plus whiffs) and has continued to be a pleasant surprise for the Royals since returning from the IL on July 9. In four starts since then, Yarbrough's posted a 2.19 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 15:2 K:BB in 24.2 innings. The southpaw currently lines up for a tough test against the Phillies on the road next weekend.
