Padres optioned INF Ryan Jackson and OF Alex Castellanos to Triple-A El Paso; reassigned OF Alex Dickerson, RHPs Kevin Quackenbush and Blaine Boyer and LHP Tony Sipp to minor league camp. The club has also informed Rule 5 pick Patrick Schuster that he will not make the team. Jackson, Castellanos and Sipp all entered camp with a shot at Opening Day roster spots, but they were ultimately unable to crack the big league squad.

Ryan Jackson had a big night at the plate on Friday, plating three runs in leading the Padres to a 7-2 victory over the Mariners in Cactus League play. Jackson finished the night 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. The 25-year-old got the start at shortstop in this one, and is expected to function in a super utility role with the Padres should he crack the Opening Day roster.

Ryan Jackson went 1-for-2 with a double and scored the Padres lone run in Friday's Cactus League loss to the Mariners. Jackson's third inning double was the Padres lone extra-base hit in the contest, and one of only five overall. Acquired over the winter in a trade from the Astros, the 25-year-old is expected to parlay his bat and defensive versatility into a bench role with the Padres this season.

Padres acquired INF Ryan Jackson from the Astros for OF Jesus Guzman. Jackson was claimed off waivers earlier this winter from the Cardinals, so his stay in Houston was brief. The 25-year-old hit .278/.352/.346 with Triple-A Memphis this past season. He's able to play both middle infield spots and will contend for a bench role next spring.

Astros claimed INF Ryan Jackson off waivers from the Cardinals. Jackson has appeared in 20 games with the Cardinals over the past two seasons and owns a .270/.330/.365 batting line in the minors. It's not a surprising destination for the 25-year-old given Jeff Luhnow's past with the Cardinals.

Ryan Jackson is starting at shortstop on Thursday night against Cincinnati left-hander Tony Cingrani. Jackson, promoted on Tuesday, hit .278 with a .352 on-base percentage at Triple-A Memphis, but he mashed against southpaws, batting .331 with a .397 OBP. That skill is likely to get his name in the lineup over Pete Kozma and Daniel Descalso with a lefty on the mound -- at least initially. A nice performance tonight would certainly help Jackson's argument.

Ryan Jackson could "definitely be in the mix," to draw starts at shortstop, according to Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. Jackson hit .278 with a .352 on-base percentage at Triple-A Memphis and was promoted when rosters expanded. St. Louis' current shortstop tandem, featuring Pete Kozma and Daniel Descalso, isn't producing at the dish, which may provide an opening for Jackson, who isn't an elite defender like Kozma but would slot nicely into some sort of platoon. Jackson tortured Triple-A southpaws this season, batting .331 with a .397 OBP.

Cardinals recalled INF Ryan Jackson from Triple-A Memphis. Jackson made the Opening Day roster as a backup middle infielder, but he lasted only a week before being sent back to the farm. Jackson, who slashed .278/.352/.346 at Memphis, will return to a utility role.

Cardinals recalled INF Ryan Jackson from Triple-A Memphis. Jackson will provide middle infield depth for now, but is expected to head to the minors once David Freese (back) is ready to return from the disabled list. He may only be with the big club for about a week.
